Chris Stephenson, Head of Computer Science Education Programs at Google Inc., received the 2016 ACM Presidential Award for creating the Computer Science Teachers Association, an international organization dedicated to supporting teachers and pursuing excellence in CS education for K-12 students. ACM, teachers, and students worldwide are indebted to Chris Stephenson for her landmark work in creating an international organization dedicated to supporting teachers and pursuing excellence in CS education for K-12 students. As the architect and first executive director of the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA), Chris led the charge that changed the way CS education is appreciated at the K-12 level. Teachers today have access to unprecedented opportunities for professional development thanks to the efforts of CSTA. Indeed, the guidelines in the ACM K-12 Computer Science Standards are now recognized as the de facto U.S. CS curriculum standard. Chris also made major contributions to awareness of and broad progress on K-12 CS education including through her co-authorship of the Running on Empty report and her participation as a founding member of the Computing in the Core organization. ACM salutes Chris Stephenson for her steadfast devotion to CS education. Find out more about Stephenson and other inspiring here: www.acm.org/ada-lovelace-day #AdaLovelaceDay

Lydia E. Kavraki of Rice University was the 2017-2018 Athena Lecturer, cited for the invention of randomized motion-planning algorithms in robotics and the development of robotics-inspired methods for bioinformatics and biomedicine. She also received the 2000 ACM Grace Murray Hopper Award, and was named an ACM Fellow in 2010. Kavraki developed randomized path-planning algorithms for robots with many degrees of freedom. Traditional algorithms for such problems usually depend exponentially on the dimensionality of the problem and are thus impractical for problems with more than five degrees of freedom. She also established the effectiveness of methods that combine randomization with local, problem-specific techniques for problems that simply could not be handled any other way. Recently, Kavraki has extended her work in several directions, including the application of randomized path planning to model molecular docking in rational drug design, and the treatment of flexible objects. Although this problem has been recognized for over a decade,Kavraki was the first to develop a rigorous planning model for flexible objects. Kavraki's contributions have had a profound influence on the development of path planning techniques and are recognized for both their depth and breadth. Her work reflects a level of originality, rigor, and elegance that stands out in the research community. In contrast to the cultural imaginary of the kitchen table, the studio is already imagined as a creative space through its connection to the professional practices of artists and designers. In this imaginary, the studio is the location in which acts of creativity, often arising from the vision of the individual creator, facilitate entry into the public spheres of the art world. Feminist media art often troubles the binary between the private sphere of the kitchen table and the more publicly aligned space of the studio. Rather than separating these spaces, feminist media art configures them as co-constitutive. We invite you to join our ATEC feminist media studio, stitching together themes of power, embodiment, and identity; engaging in collectivity and collaboration; nourishing creative and communal impulses; all in order to glitch the dominant systems of the art market, gallery systems, and the social contexts in which they are situated. #adalovelaceday

The kitchen table has a place in the public imagination as a site of nourishment, family gathering, and care, but it also has served as an important hub of political organizing and movement-building. As a space of gathering both domestic and social, the kitchen table stands at the intersection of the personal and the political. It fosters the creation of intimate connection and affinity that enables collectives to prepare to engage in more public-facing work. The importance of the kitchen table in the feminist public imagination is signaled in projects like Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press, a groundbreaking late 20th-century press for works by and for women of color. We invite you to join us at ATEC's (re-)envisioning of the kitchen table: to commune in fellowship, to learn to stitch, and to prepare to move into the studio. #adalovelaceday

For four decades, Margaret Boden has been one of the world’s premiere thought leaders on the intersection of artificial intelligence, cognitive science and the humanities. She has an unusually interdisciplinary background with degrees in medical sciences, philosophy, and psychology, and she integrates these disciplines with AI in her research. Her main contributions include seminal work to define and nurture the area of computational creativity and creative cognition, as well as her work on the history of cognitive science and its computational connections. Boden received the 2017 ACM – AAAI Allen Newell Award for her contributions to the philosophy of cognitive science, particularly in the cognitive study of human creativity, and to its historiography.
