Two signed vintage prints today—both linocuts, I believe, executed in black ink on paper that in both cases I think was once much closer to white than it is today! On the back of the frame of the first is written “Kayak Race,” and the print itself is mounted to a larger sheet on which appears the artist’s signature, Pat McNair. While I have not been able to find out anything about him or her, I certainly think they created a marvelous print that has me wanting to kayak out in wilder waters than I am typically inclined to do! I especially love the treatment of the form of this racer : black for the helmet, vest, and forward stretched arm, then negative space for the arm along the side of the boat. And then how the kayak is just sailing forward atop those great graphic waves, echoed by the swirling sky; oh, I want to feel like this! The second (scroll), titled “Landscape,” is on a thin, washi-type paper, signed by Sue Kutosh, May 1967, and numbered 4 of 4. I purchased this one at the estate sale of a family of artists, and just loved it for how mid-century it feels and for its almost manic quality, packing in trees, vines, suns, stars, and rain, plus a rather Calder-esque form, which I think may be an animal, and perhaps that is the head of a fish next to it? I have found the work of an NYC based artist named Sue Kutosh online, who graduated from Carnegie Mellon in 1971, has shown in this area, and who has since painted quite a variety of things (including some rather fantastical portraits in a realist style—a Cleopatra among them!), but to me this seems rather an accomplished print for a high schooler….maybe her mother was Sue Kotosh, too?! Regardless, a pretty great piece! $60 each. “Kayak Race” image size is 4 5/8 x 5 1/2”, framed 13” x 9 3/4”. “Landscape” image size 4 1/2” x6 1/2” framed 9”x11”. Both up in the shop, links in photos.

Elle S’appelle Caroline, sheet music cover showing the drawing of the singer Mistinguett (Jeanne Bourgeois ). It was created for Maurice Chevalier and Mistinguett, one of the most popular and highest paid female entertainers of her time, known for her flamboyance and risqué routines; in 1919 her legs were insured for 500,000 francs. It was performed in the Casino de Paris. print
