Last dinner in Bhutan was at Wangchuk’s house. Wanchuk is actually one of the most common Bhutanese surname, but we called the little kid with glasses Wangchuk coz we couldnt remember his name. Hard 🤣 Wangchuk is a very clever kid and he speaks English unbelievably well! He also showed us how to play archery. One day he will become a successful person and maybe we can meet again later in the future. esehouse

This second collection of amazing and amusing Bhutanese phallus images is the continuation of my last post, once again dedicated to the eccentric saint and 'Divine Madman' Drukpa Kunley, whose intention was to show that celibacy is not necessary for being enlightened. He is also associated with a rich tradition of symbolic phalluses of any kind, dating back to pre-Buddhist animistic rituals. For the Bhutanese population, the phallus protects against negative forces, increases fertility, and challenges the human ego. During religious festivals, the atsara (clown-like entertainers in colourful costumes who represent the acarya, the spiritual masters of India) keep the public amused with their oversized wooden phalluses and antics and recall Drukpa Kunley's magical and sexual powers while preceding the religious dances and making sure the event is orderly and peaceful. esehouse

GOOD LUCK for 2019 with this little collection of Bhutanese phallus paintings! In Bhutan the phallus is supposed to provide particularly effective protection against negative forces. It symbolises good luck and protection against evil spirits and delusion, consequently the image of an erect penis can be seen everywhere: painted on the walls of many farmhouses, shops or restaurants, hung as carved wooden phalluses from roof tops at the four corners of new houses or adorning number plates of trucks. Although it can be assumed that the worship of the phallus was practiced even before the arrival of Buddhism in Bhutan, the symbolic phallus is primarily associated with the eccentric saint Drukpa Kunley (1455-1529), also known as the ’Divine Madman’, who is still held in great honour, precisely on account of his rejection of dogmatic thought, his unconventional way of life, and his eccentric behaviour. Originally from Tibet, Drukpa Kunley is credited with helping introduce Buddhism to Bhutan and subduing a number of demons and demonesses with the help of his ‘Flaming Thunderbolt of Wisdom’. He is surely one of the most controversial holy men and remarkable individuals who spread the teachings of the Drukpa Kagyu. His teachings often took the form of blasphemous, obscene songs and legends full of subtle, coarse wit. Drukpa Kunley broke with all the conventions, norms and formal rules of Buddhism and society, with the intention to shock the clergy, who were uppity and prudish in their behaviour and teachings of Buddhism. To be continued... esehouse
