Since the nightmarish spiralling of Brexit in the UK seemingly hurtling to a catastrophic no deal this week, I’ve been glued to Twitter and the Guardian. I am both grateful and hopeless. Anyone who solely blames Facebook for Brexit has never opened a tabloid (or most broadsheets) in the UK. I’d take Twitter over many other news outlets any day. The hateful the scapegoating of immigrants, people of colour and the EU has built up over decades by politicians and right wing journos. The whole media (and political) ecosystem is messed up. The drive for clicks and eyeballs can influence traditional media and the prejudice, hatred and power imbalances of traditional media can influence digital media. Social media does not change opinions but there is evidence to suggest that it can lead to greater polarisation. The shady world of dark, targeted ads also leads to a lack of transparency. But while social media was a factor in the referendum result, let’s not kid ourselves that it happened because of social media. I think one of the biggest problems with the “digital wellbeing space” is that we often overstate the power of digital design over our autonomy, while massively underestimating the role of our surrounding support networks and socio-political contexts. The platforms are not neutral, but they’re not detached from our wider contexts either. How these tools are used, adopted and exploited by our political, professional and social contexts matter a lot. We have to remember that if you were under 50, you were overwhelmingly less likely to vote leave. If you were over 65, you were far more likely to vote leave and share fake news than younger people. I am at this protest because of hearing about it on Facebook and Twitter. But I am also painfully aware that these tools were exploited by shady funders to influence the referendum result. We talk a lot about how older generations need to look after younger people, but it’s up to younger generations to help their parents and grandparents to be digitally literate too. * * * #cambridgeanalytica

Since the referendum, Brexit has cost the UK £26bn a year, £500m a week (Source: The Centre for European Reform), and this number is ever increasing. Meanwhile, councils are cutting significant funding from children’s services across the country. Between 2012-2017 the borough of Ealing in London had 80% of its council funding to youth services cut (Source: @guardian). We are told repeatedly that one of the only solutions we have to knife crime in this country is community centres. Whilst our government plays an endless, costly and juvenile game of tug of war, we’re continually stripping our most vulnerable children of these safe spaces. I hope the sun shines on today’s March and that it’s loud enough to wake this government up. 🇪🇺🇪🇺🇬🇧🇬🇧
