Another 'poverty-porn' on Oscar's lineup. Capernaum (2018, dir. Nadine Labaki) is a heartbreaking depiction of social disparities on Lebanon. It was promising at the beginning with an enticing premise of 'sueing own parents for being born' and a glimpse of hyper-realism cinema. Yet what follows is somewhat disappointing, it failed to fulfill the 'naturalistic' potential of the cast and hellish slum life of Lebanon by providing us a tricky and manipulative storyline. Sad, because in the end it ruled out the opportunity of a lifetime to actually raise the viewers' awareness as it functions merely as a 'tear-jerker' movie. Still the performance from the cast is over the top here. Seriously, Zain and Yonas's actor (a 1-year old baby) deserved all the praises they got. . . And then there's another insightful yet horrific fact about the movie, check out my last pic or go directly to kohljournal.press/poverty-porn . . #cinephile

Just Watched.... —————————————————————- I, Tonya (2017) —————————————————————- Margot Robbie is very impressive in this biopic of Tonya Harding, which she produced and developed as well starred in. Tonya Harding was the bad girl of 80s/90s ice skating, an unconventional outsider of the sport, accused of arranging for competitor Nancy Kerrigan to be attacked with a police baton to remove her from the 1994 Olympics. Or did she? The film follows the unconventional spirit of Tonya and tells its story in a Rashamon style of competing (and unreliable) viewpoints, mixing drama with faux talking head documentary sections which allow much breaking of the fourth wall. The central chambers are all well drawn and the performances are excellent, especially Alison Janney as Harding's uncomprimising mother. The film cleverly moves away from a documentary style to something more staged, as the story heads towards the films central incident and the narratives are increasingly unreliable. Whilst I, Tonya can be laugh out load funny, there is also a darkness at its core. The drama ultimately is one about control; the husband, the mother, the coaches and judges all want to be responsible for the glory of Harding’s success. Harding arranges for the hit on Kerrigan (or did she) in order to control the result. Whilst she portrays herself as the victim throughout the story, by the end things do not seem clear. A nuanced and original take on the sports biopic which shouldn't be missed. #cinephile

Subrata Mitra's cinematography proves cinematic details can sometimes express more than the dialogue itself. From the sweeping panning shots of Charu's mansion to highlight her loneliness, to her POV shots with her opera glasses. Best Cinematography goes to Charulata! 🎥 #cinephile
