New blog post: “Take Action on Climate Change to Cope with Your Grief” - Last week, after the IPCC released its alarming report, I heard many sentiments along the lines of “No one will make the necessary changes so I won’t either. We’re doomed.” Yes, governments and industry worldwide must implement policies to curb climate change and here in the US, our federal politicians appear determined to speed up our demise. But there are reasons for hope, including: - 1. States like California and Hawaii continue to lead the way as they move toward a clean energy future. - 2. In January 2019, the Kilagi amendment goes into effect. It will drastically reduce heat-trapping hydrofluorocarbons, which could prevent warming by 0.5°F. - 3. A court of appeal in The Hague upheld a ruling that the Dutch government has a duty to combat climate change. Similar cases are underway in the US, Belgium, Norway and Ireland. - We citizens must take action. If you’ve been feeling paralyzed, these steps will help: - 1. Join @350org or a similar group. - 2. Avoid wasting food. Food rotting in landfill releases methane gas, a greenhouse gas much more potent than CO2. - 3. Eat a plant-rich diet. You have so many delicious choices. - 4. Buy less stuff. Stuff requires resources, transportation and all too often, landfill space at the end of its short life. - 5. Cut the plastic. The fossil fuel industry has poured $180 billion into new plastic production facilities since 2010. Avoid supporting the industry that has caused the climate crisis. - 6. Walk or bike more. As with all of these suggestions, you’ll improve your well-being. - 7. Live consciously. Tackling climate change requires us to examine all of our actions every moment, every day. - 8. Read up on climate change and solutions like @projectdrawdown. Have conversations. - 9. Vote. Many of our leaders represent fossil fuel companies rather than the people. Vote them out. Their children’s and grandchildren’s futures depend on it. - Link in profile full post. - #climatechange
