This is the face of someone who was woken up at 4am by the police to ask why I hadn't paid for petrol. It's also the face of someone who now has to get new number plates because mine were stolen. It is not the face of someone who enjoys living in Armidale anymore. Yes, we will be open today, but I might be late due to learning how to put number plates on cars. #crime

The Magdalene sisters (2002) is a terrific film that portrays the plight of women and girls that were unjustly sentenced to hard labour for their ‘sins’. These sins could involve having a baby out of wedlock, being sexually abused or being too pretty. I was reminded of this film when I came a across a Magdalene laundry in the 1911 census. Seeing the names of these poor women makes it all the more real. You can see over half were sent from all over Ireland and even one from England, in order to avoid shame on the families. You would like to think that the closures of these institutions came from the realisation of right and wrong but in actuality it was two things, globalisation and modern technology. Globalisation meant people were no longer in delay with the occurrences of the world. News spread faster, especially crimes against humanity. modern technology meant nearly every home contained a washing machine. The laundries were no longer a lucrative business for the church and therefore the use of slave labour was not needed. The last laundry closed in 1996. I wonder how many of these women never left? • #crime
