Dark Original Fairy Tales Now looking back as an adult the fairytales we grew up with were a lot darker then we originally thought, especially with the sugar coated Disney versions. One prime example is The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen. The Disney Movie is still fairly faithful to the story, a princess mermaid with many sisters and after falling in love with a human sacrifices her tail for legs and is silenced. However unlike Ariel, the Little Mermaid is in severe pain feeling adjusting to her legs, so much that they bleed and if the Prince doesn't fall in love with her she will turn into seafoam once she hits The water. Also mermaids live for hundreds of years but because they have no soul they don't go to heaven or hell, instead ceasing to exist. The Prince is safely put in a temple instead of on the beach. When he finds the mermaid they become greats friends but instead of a sea witch in disguise he falls in love with a girl from the temple, believing she is the one who saved him. Her sisters appear and say if she kills the Prince she may be a mermaid again, but when she goes to his room he whispers his new wife's name and the mermaid can not kill the man she loves. She silently says farewell and jumps into the ocean becoming seafoam. However because of her selfless act the mermaid is granted a soul and becomes a daughter of the wind, with the promise of one day going to God's Kingdom. Of course with such religious under tones and a tragic ending Disney went with a much happier and simple tale, though personally I prefer the original. Art by Edmund Dulac #edmunddulac
