Chapursan ReportShareDownload17

As a crowd began to gather in Ispanj, Chapursan to watch the afternoon's polo match, I noticed a little white figure sitting high atop a hill overlooking the field. Several others joined as the match began, surveying the clacking mallets and galloping horses from their lofty vantage point. During a lull in the gameplay, I decided to head up the hill to see what the view was like from the top. I emerged huffing and puffing to delighted salaams from what turned out to be a group of old women from the village. They were not at all bothered to see me there, and insisted I come and sit with them at their lookout next to a small hilltop cemetery. Though polo is considered a men's sport, the women maintained passionate commentary on the match with each other in their local language of Wakhi, scoffing and cackling at some of the less graceful moves of the novice players. We could only communicate through sign language and very basic Urdu, but their savage commentating and jolly demeanor nevertheless made me laugh many a time while perched on the rocky outcrop. Many of you often ask how I get around or communicate with people in my travels, given I'm not fluent in any local languages. But this is a perfect example of how you don't always need words to communicate. Though language certainly makes everything easier, you'd be amazed to see how much you can say when everyone is motivated to interact, and patient enough to truly listen.
