MOVIE REVIEW: The Night Comes for Us (2018) Directed by: Timo Tjahjanto Starring: Joe Taslim, Iko Uwais, Julie Estelle, Hannah Al Rashid, Zack Lee and Sunny Pang Review: The Night Comes for Us was one of my most anticipated movies of 2018 because seeing a lot of the cast from The Raid movies in this had me very excited. The Night Comes for Us was a brutal, non-stop violent journey. My jaw dropped throughout this movie because of the insane action and absolute blood and violence. This movie follows Ito (Taslim) who gets caught in a violent bloodbath from the Triad, upon returning home. I really enjoyed The Night Comes for Us. I found it easy to follow along with some of the most violent scenes I’ve ever seen. Joe Taslim stars as Ito and it was nice to see someone else headlining this insane action movie. Not to take anything from Iko Uwais, but it felt refreshing to me. Taslim is very stoic and straight to the point and while those traits can work, I found it a hard to connect to his character. It was great to see Iko Uwais play against type as an antagonist. You root for him at times as you’re used to seeing him as the hero, but also because this movie seemed to develop his character better than Taslim’s. One of my favourite parts was Julie Estelle as The Operator. She shows up and from that point, I wanted to see more of her character. We can’t talk about this movie without getting into the action. My god, what an absolute thrill. While I think the action is better in The Raid movies, this was 100% more violent. No matter how hard some of the action was to watch, I was so satisfied and wanted more. I also liked the story as it’s simple and feels like this world of the Triad has a lot more to offer, especially with Estelle’s character. Where this movie doesn’t do it for me is how I didn’t really care for Ito. I’ve already mentioned how he’s stoic and though that can work, this movie could have done with one or two emotional scenes. This movie also isn’t for the faint of heart. There is so much violence in this movie where at times, even I squirmed a little. So if you’re ready for two hours of people getting massacred, this is definitely worth a watch. Rating: B+
