We did some exploring with our clients yesterday in the unfinished space under their porch. We found a wood frame window with the panes still intact and an old chicken coop from before their time! We decided to name the room the "Chicken Dungeon" . . . . . . . #historicalhomes

I’m so excited to share this update on my house renovation. I have seriously been waiting months for this to be started and it is finally here! This right here is my kitchen/breakfast room addition. It is also the key to my house construction really beginning. Once this is completed our contractor can start rebuilding the older 1700s part of the house. And then I will actually start seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. Right now... all I see is the tunnel... but it sure is close! Check out my blog (link in bio) for the updates that have been made to the stone work and interior fireplaces. #historicalhomes

During the Roman period, persecuted Christians fled to Cappadocia (more specifically the town of Göreme), and soon came to the realization that tuff was a useful, malleable material. The inhabitants set about building a network of handmade caves, living quarters, churches, stables, and storehouses, all dug into the soft rock. Today, there are still obvious signs of past lives within the honeycombed network of hand-built rock: the stables with handles used to tether animals, walls with holes meant for air circulation, and blackened walls that were once the kitchens. Theme of the day for is “mourning” during the 19th century it was very common for funerals to take place in the home. The dead was washed and dressed by a family member of the same gender. Mirrors and portraits were covered in black cloth. It was believed that the dead’s soul could get stuck in the mirror. It was also believed that a portrait that was not covered, those depicted in the portrait would be the next to die. In Irish culture a window is opened to release the soul from the body and the house. A small ceremony took place in the home usually among family and friends. The coffin was then taken to the grave yard will all funeral attendees following behind the wagon pulling the coffin. There would be a small pray/ceremony in the grave yard before attendees returned to the home for a lavish meal. . . . #historicalhomes
