Day 5: Does the language you use while teaching yoga promote inclusion? Can you use language more sensitive to the people in the room?⠀ ⠀ Most of the pet peeves I have in yoga spaces as a queer person hover around gender-inclusive language. When teachers greet the class with a whimsical"Hey ladies!" or cue using "That space where your bra strap connects" as an anatomical location, or warn "Women who are menstruating should not invert" I always cringe. Overall, I'm fortunate to be able to just shake off these presumptions, but these seemingly innocent comments could be triggering for others. ⠀ ⠀ I'd REALLY love to see the yoga community get better at this., so here's a quick (though totally incomplete) guide:⠀ ⠀ REMEMBER: You can't tell someone's gender just by looking at them. There is no way to know if someone is trans or nonbinary unless they tell you. [And it's not really our business anyway, right?]⠀ ⠀ Instead of using these gendered cues, try some of these neutral phrases:⠀ ⠀ - Hey everyone!⠀ ⠀ - Place the block between your shoulder blades, in the space behind your heart.⠀ ⠀ - People who are menstruating might choose not to invert, along with anyone who doesn't feel like it today.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Try some of these out and let me know how it goes! Of course we all slip up sometimes. When it happens, fix it quickly, apologize, and move on! ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Other language to watch out for can include: diet talk, fatphobia, ableism, white supremacy, trauma sensitivity, and so many more. What might YOU add here?⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Big thanks to @accessibleyoga and @yogaquota for putting on this IG Challenge. It was a really nice change of pace and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing everyone else's posts with stories and advice!⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #keeppracticing

Play time! Yes! Let’s play some… but in order to play a good game, it’s very important to know the rules. When I am try to introduce to my students a “advanced pose”, that I rather call it elaborated, I always make sure they understand the REAL goal of the pose, so, even if someone is not flexible or strong enough to do the full pose, they can work their body in a safe/well aligned/keeping the goal of the pose way. Specially working with the population with special needs I had to use my creativity in order to find ways to break down and simplify poses, without losing the focus and the breath, so they could fully benefit from each position during my classes. Just knowing to perform a elaborated pose, many times is not enough if you are a teacher, you must know step-by—step, how to get the right muscles involved in the pose all the steps of the way. So, bare with me and try to work on the skills to get to the final pose, before attempting to do it. The beauty of yoga is: even if you can’t do it like the models in magazines, you can still do it in a way to bring benefits to your body, if you keep the muscles working to help you; keep the balance between strength and flexibility; and BREATH, try to find space and learn how to use it. So, going back to this pose: we need to work on hip opening, but make sure not to forget to keep your inner tights active, so you don’t let your knees to “open”. Work on the stretching of the hamstring of the leg you are going to extend. And don’t raise the sitting bone out of the floor quite yet, until you are capable of holding the foot with the opposite hand. If you are straightening the right leg, the right hand will be in front, and the arm is helping to keep that leg back (but this is only when you are almost there). Try to keep your whole body present and elongate your back as much as possible, keeping the lateral of your torso on the opposite side of the leg that is up as straight as possible. Keep breathing and have fun! #keeppracticing

🥳🗓🤸🏽‍♀️ Day 1️⃣9️⃣ of with @cyogalife ➡️ Side or 🤸🏽‍♀️🗓🥳 This awesome combines a lot of elements in just one pose: it’s a deep twist, great and important strengthener... It took me a few years to be able to land on one side so, give it time if it hasn’t happened yet. For most people, the hardest part is the twist, second hardest, the head lift. Lotus has to be real easy at this point so, if it’s not, or if any of the difficulties I just mentioned prevent you from doing the pose, my suggestion is to undo the leg fold and master going from Tripod into Side Crow (or a ‘Half Lotus + Half Side Crow’ version), twist deeply, then pick the head up, hold for a few breaths, drop the crown again and lift legs back to vertical. The easier this becomes, the faster Parsva Kukkuta will come. If you can also do it a few times in a row without coming down (Tripod to Side Crow, back to Tripod then Side Crow on the arm, back to Tripod and so on...), you’ll build tremendous stamina, very necessary, especially to pick the head up once Lotus is resting on the opposite arm. By all means, face a wall if you need to or use a block/blanket under the crown (the thicker, the easier to lift up but also harder to balance in regular Tripod, watch out!). Place another blanket behind the wrist you’re attempting to drop on, so the knee has extra padding in case you miss the arm, safety first! As imagined, deep twists (like yesterday’s ), forward folds and milder hip openers should be done to warm up properly. and let’s give it a try! Comment below how it goes and save the pic for next January...
