Such a great pleasure to be given a tour of Porthmeor Studios at St. Ives, by Lucy Frears and Chris Hibbert after @polly.staple 's insightful talk about @chisenhalegallery 's practice. Some artists are so generous to open their studios to us. The dreaming sea view from the window might make Porthmeor Studios one of the most envious working spaces. A number of globally recognised artists have resided here from its first opening in 1929 such as Francis Bacon and Ben Nicholson; also recently Turner Prize winner Lubaina Himid CBE & Daniel Sinsel have started their Residencies. Michael Dean @ffffucksake arrives in August. #markdionstudio

So privileged to be given a tour of Porthmeor Studios, following @polly.staple ’s excellent talk about her work @chisenhalegallery - Image 1: the intricacy and attention to detail of Mark Dion’s Installation “The Maritime Artist” ; Image 2: the basement Pilchard Cellars of the Studios , used by fishermen to store their equipment. Porthmeor Studios have attracted internationally acclaimed artists such as Ben Nicholson , Francis Bacon and Roger Hilton for over 130 years . Several artists were so generous to open their studios to us. Image 3: the serene, inspiring space of Studio 4 occupied by Felicity Mara. Thankyou to Chris Hibbert and Lucy Frears for their generosity, giving up their time to welcome us to the space. #markdionstudio

On February 8, 1996, a giant Western Hemlock tree fell in an old growth forest just outside of Seattle. The tree was dead, in the traditional sense, but it housed an ecosystem that was teeming with life. Eventually it was transported by a team led by artist Mark Dion to a purpose-built greenhouse in Olympic Sculpture Park for a permanent installation entitled Neukom Vivarium.⁣ ⁣ On this day in 2006, it opened its doors to the public. Today the work is operated by volunteers and visitors can go and see the tree, as well as the many plants and critters that continue to call it home (illustrated tiles along the installation’s base provide a handy guide to the flora and fauna you might find within). While the work may read like a sanctuary for its many inhabitants, Dion had a darker vision in mind. “In some ways,” he has said, “this project is an abomination.” He describes the massive technological apparatus acting as the ecosystem’s “life support” as a reminder to viewers that “despite all of our technology and money, when we destroy a natural system, it’s virtually impossible to get it back.⁣ ⁣ studio ⁣ ⁣ Photo by Evan Chakroff
