My Life In Cars No. 26 2006 Honda Odyssey By mid 2000s our family was growing. With a baby boy and more to come, we knew we needed something bigger than a Jetta. Even though SUVs were all the rage I knew a minivan would serve us well. But there was only one van I could see myself in; Honda Odyssey. It’s obviously the best looking van around. Chrysler might’ve created the market but Honda was clearly winning. The van’s V6 was smooth and had enough power to make driving pleasurable. It kinda drove like a heavy car rather than a van. We put over 200K miles in 10 years. After many dings and scratches, the latest fender bender caused our insurance to pay out on our van. We took the money and thanked our van like Marie Kondo would a well worn sweater. . . . #mylifeincars

My Life In Cars No. 25 Volkswagen Jetta I was able to convince my then girlfriend, now wife, to go from a boring Camry to a fun Jetta. It was a brand new early 2000s, cute, boxy fourth generation Volkswagen Jetta in silver. Since she knew how to drive a stick we opted for a 5 speed. The 2.0 engine was peppy and indeed it was fun. But we noticed the darn thing would burn oil like a thirsty diesel. After few unsuccessful visits to the dealership, one of the tech told us that the engine was a high revving engine designed to burn little bit of oil. It wasn’t little. After some digging online, others had similar issues with this engine. There was never a class action lawsuit or anything but we did look into lemon law. VW quickly switched the base engine from 2.0 to 1.8 turbo. Hmmm. . . . #mylifeincars

My Life In Cars No. 24 Isuzu Rodeo Due to financial circumstances we had to sell the M3. My brother had bought this gray Isuzu Rodeo but I ended up taking over the payment and it became mine. My first car, (technically a truck) mostly paid for by myself. Isuzu is known for building commercial trucks so when the SUV market was heating up it probably wanted some of that action. The overall design wasn’t bad, it was nicely balanced and somewhat handsome. But unlike the Toyotas and Nissans of its day the interior felt cheap. The four cylinder engine didn’t help; even if it was mated to a five speed manual. Once I was about to embark on a road trip and on the freeway on-ramp the head gasket blew. The truck only had 80K miles. . . . #mylifeincars

My Life In Cars No. 23 BMW E30 M3 This car was the climax of my own motoring experience in terms of performance. After I sold the XR4Ti my brother got me a used 1988 M3. In dark gray. It was bit rough around the edges but it drove great. The previous owner had lowered the car tiny bit so that helped the car’s legendary handling even more. I could corner a turn at 50 with minimal lean. Truly awesome. Had I known how desired these cars would get I would’ve kept it. But as with life I needed the money and sold it after couple of years. I still miss this car. . . . #mylifeincars
