We went in search of the one horned Rhino on our last non working day in . And it was an absolute honour and privelage to have seen them. The great one horned (or “Indian rhino”) is the largest of the rhino species. It is a grey giant, second only to an elephant in size. Once widespread across the entire northern part of the Indian sub-continent, Rhino populations plummeted as they were hunted for sport or killed as agricultural pests. This pushed the species very close to extinction and by the end of the 20th century, fewer than 200 animals remained. Historically, the rhinos were distributed in the floodplain and forest tracts in Brahmaputra, Ganges and Indus river valley. Today, however, no more than 2,000 remain in the wild The recovery of the greater one-horned rhino is among the greatest conservation success stories in .
