“George Amberson-Minafer walked home through the strange streets of what seemed to be a strange city. For the town was growing... changing... it was heaving up in the middle, incredibly; it was spreading incredibly. And as it heaved and spread, it befouled itself and darkened its skies. This was the last walk home he was ever to take up National Avenue, to Amberson Edition, and the big old house at the foot of Amberson Boulevard. Tomorow they were to move out. Tomorrow everything would be gone.” There have been many films that have missing footage. Three come to mind with being cinemas greatest tragedies: Orson Welles’s The Magnificent Ambersons, Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, and Erich von Stroheim’s Greed. Those three directors are some of my favorites. Greed was 8 hours and ran 42 film reels, but initially it was cut. The twelve people who saw the original cut claimed that it was “the greatest film of all time” and “no other film will ever compare”. Before there was Warner Bros tampering with the DCEU there was RKO. Welles completed the film, which was around 148 minutes. While he was in Brazil filming something for Rockefeller RKO took it into their own hands to cut over 50 minutes of footage then do some reshoots. The cut scenes not only affect the narrative, but also the themes, editing, and making the time lines hard to follow. Even Bernard Herrmann refused to be credited for his score since he hated the butchered version. These three films are part of some of the greatest cinematic tragedies. They are the cinematic Holy Grail for some. I do hope these cuts exist somewhere. When it was announced that the Criterion Collection was going to release the Magnificent Ambersons I immediately thought to myself, “DID THEY FIND THE ORIGINAL CUT?!” Sadly no, but it’ll still be the best quality released for this film. #orsonwelles
