I really struggle with this kind of photography. Something is always missing. πŸ˜‚ I spent an embarrassingly long time running around my house for this silly shot. But I need practice so it must be done! Do you think an eye for something like this can be developed? Or do you either have it or not? πŸ€”πŸ§ FOLLOW @pottery_lovers_insta for more β¬…β¬…β¬… @pottery_lovers_insta for moreβ¬…β¬…β¬… @pottery_lovers_insta for more β¬…β¬…β¬… via: @hammerlyceramics #potteryshards

Roman hunting dog's head from a Nene Valley Colour-Coated ware drinking beaker depicting hounds chasing a stag or hare. AD 100-350. Found on the River Thames foreshore, London. See lower image and swipe for complete example. . Early Roman accounts of Britain depict it as a grim place. Caesar complained the weather was miserable, with frequent rain and mists, while Horace was concerned that outside of Kent, Britons 'do not cultivate the land but share their wives with family members, live on milk and meat, and wear the skins of animals'. Britain was the barbarian 'other' vs the civilisation of Rome. . There were however, a few things that the Roman inhabitants of Britain found desirable. These included the island's wool, grain, lead, tin and dogs. . British 'celere' (dogs used to chase down wild animals) were famed throughout the empire and widely exported. One enthusiast described them as 'inflamed with the spirit ofΒ MarsΒ (the god of war) such was their ferocity'. . This was just as well, as the hounds of Britannia were not sought after for their looks, if Oppian's 3rd Century description is anything to go by; 'their size is like that of worthless and greedy domestic table dogs; squat, emaciated, shaggy, dull of eye but endowed with feet armed with powerful claws and a mouth sharp with close-set venomous tearing teeth. It is by virtue of its nose, however, that the agassian (Roman name given to British hunting dogs) is most exalted, and for tracking it is the best there is'. . Swipe (x2-4); additional depictions of Roman dogs including plaster cast of a guard dog that perished at Pompeii. . Β Β Β  Β  Β Β  Β shardsΒ Β
