“Siddharta” - Acrylics on canvas 60x90cm 2018 (cropped instagram version) This painting depicts Siddharta Gautama during his time fasting beneath the bodhi tree. I choose a traditional tibetan style grid to portrait him but painted it fairly freely as far as the shading goes. Before Siddharta found full enlightenment and therefore became a Buddha he was an ascetic for six years and he barely ate any food and practiced in the most severe conditions. He then realised that there must be a middle way and started to eat again. After his enlightenment he fasted again for 49 days before he started teaching the Dharma. He later said that severe fasting and living in such harsh condition won’t serve a persons journey and it is best to live without craving and attachment. #shakyamuni
