I’ve been thinking about body image a lot the last few weeks and how mine has changed over the years. As a teenager (and well into young adulthood), I despised my big boobs and my thick thighs. I cried every time my bra and pant sizes went up. I came of age during the 90s and early 2000s when heroine chic was a thing! I also wasn’t fully steeped in feminist thought until college. Now, as an angry feminist and someone who has faced multiple health challenges, most days I am far less focused on how my body looks and more on how it functions. It’s a healthier relationship. Healthier, but not always HEALTHY. I can’t say I’ve necessarily achieved positive body image. On my best days, I’m grateful for what my body CAN do and I’m focused on partnering with it to fuel it properly and rest it as much as possible. But many days I spiral into thinking about my limitations and feeling angry that my body is attacking itself and resentful that I even need to put thought into that partnership. [Art and Alba] Have you visited our website to discover our “Alba Collection”? It is a curated collection of beautiful products designed by artists who support our cause, either because they have or someone they know has experienced the challenges associated with endometriosis, infertility or cancer. Art is so evocative and inspiring; it is a large part of what fueled the Alba mission from the start! . The collection is updated monthly with different pieces related to themes of wellness, resilience, courage, femininity or maternity. The goal of the collection is to raise funding for educational initiatives and health research, as well as to expand this important conversation to broader circles, beyond those who are immediately affected by these challenges. . We are always looking for artists to exhibit a piece in our online collection and to join in on this important conversation, breaking stigmas, helplessness and isolation. DM for details! . . . . . #endometriosis #endometriosisawareness #empowered #womenshealth #supportwomen #femaleillustrator #etsyartist #artforacause #makersmovement
I am 32 years old and I am 1 in 10 women who suffer from endometriosis. My symptoms began when I was a teenager. At the time I thought I just had bad periods. The pain was so excruciating I’d miss school and events with my friends. I was on birth control from the ages of 18-24. Birth control suppressed the excruciating pain and I felt great. After going off the pill the cramps and stabbing pains came back. Around this time I slowly began to hear about endometriosis. Over the course of 7 years I saw two OBGYN’s and one specialist, all who told me I did not have endometriosis. They stated I had primary dysmenorrhea (bad periods). During this time my sister, who has Stage IV endometriosis, struggled with infertility because of the disease. My sister along with Nancy’s Nook helped me become an advocate for myself. I was no longer accepting the response “you have bad periods.” Stabbing pains, cramps in my stomach/lower back and pain with intercourse is not normal!! PERIOD. In September 2018 I saw Dr Mansuria in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He thought there was a possibility I had endo. We scheduled surgery for December. Through laparoscopic surgery it was determined I did have endometriosis. I had it in 12 locations, including, but not limited to, my pelvic walls, rectum, bladder, ureters and left ovary. I hope this helps you become an advocate for yourself.

My mama sent me this video and it hit home! It takes an average of 7-10 years for a woman to be diagnosed with Endometriosis. It took 8 years for me. 🎗 #toolong #spreadtheyellow#endometriosis#womenshealth#healthychoices#endo#endoblack#endojourney#meinendometriosis#speakendo#speakup#meinendometriosis#findyourvoice#endowarrior#healthynaledi#selfcare#inspiration#endostory#findingmeinendo#1in10
