Yuranigh’s Grave The gravesite of Yuranigh, Sir Thomas Mitchell’s Aboriginal friend and tracker, is the only known site in Australia where Aboriginal and European burial practices coexist. A man who was respected by both his people and the white people that he had dealings with. Yuranigh, a Wiradjuri man, accompanied early explorer and surveyor Sir Thomas Mitchell on an expedition into the tropical interior of Australia in 1846. When Yuranigh died 4 years later, he was buried within a circle of carved trees, according to the traditional custom of his people. Out of respect, Mitchell also had a headstone placed over his grave and ensured that the land would be protected by white man’s law; petitioning for the land to be made into a National Park. As a result, the gravesite contains a unique combination of Aboriginal and European burial customs that is not known of anywhere else in Australia. This is the remnant of one of the 5 carved trees. A truely special place.
People are often polarised in their opinions of zoos. Taronga ‘s Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, NSW is a fine example of a Zoo doing it right! Their breeding programme has success with many species including this gorgeous black rhino baby. The animals have spacious enclosures in which to wander. The entire area is very well thought out and the Education Centre is exceptional with wonderful staff who explain the need to safe guard our animals to our next generation. If you haven’t visited this zoo, please consider doing so.
Mists.... It seems appropriate to farewell a beautiful lady with a pretty mist tinged with pink. Another good person, taken too soon, leaving behind a young family and loving husband and dear friends. I was lucky enough to share laughs at the dance studio. We were lucky enough to have daughters that connected through dance, with a teacher who values kindness, integrity, love and respect; fostering friendships that will endure. Fly high Trace. Xxx
