April 1-7 is Global Asbestos Awareness Week, a week dedicated by the that aims to raise awareness and educate the public about the dangers of asbestos exposure. The known carcinogen is still legal in many countries including the United States and is responsible for up to 15,000 deaths each year in the U.S. alone. @gpwlaw : According to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, “more than 14.5 million survivors of cancer are alive in the United States today, largely because of the nation’s commitment to cancer research.” Through financial contributions, scientists and researchers gain resources to investigate new techniques that aid in prevention, early detection, new targeted therapies, and support for lung cancer patients and their families. Donations are not the only way to aid in lung cancer research. You can make a difference through volunteer work, or by participating in a research study. https://www.asco.org/advocacy-policy/policies-positions-guidance/federally-funded-cancer-research @nationalcancerinstitute : https://www.cancer.gov/about-nci/overview/contributing

@gpwlaw : The leading causes of lung cancer? Smoking, radon, air pollution, and other workplace carcinogens. According to the American Thoracic Society (@atscommunity), "asbestos has been largest cause of occupational cancer in the United States.” Lung Cancer rates in specific industrial sectors reveal the increased risk to construction; mining; transportation, warehousing, and utilities; and manufacturing workers from asbestos and other workplace carcinogens. @gpwlaw : While lung cancer can occur in both men and women and at any age, a lung cancer diagnosis typically affects older people, with the average age being 70 years old. The risk of developing lung cancer increases with age; two out of three people are 65 years or older when diagnosed, while approximately two percent of lung cancer diagnoses are in individuals younger than 45. According to the @americancancersociety, the chance of men developing lung cancer in a lifetime is 1 in 14; for women, it is 1 in 17. @gpwlaw : Smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer in the US, but even smokers need to take into account asbestos exposure. The combination of smoking coupled with asbestos increases your risk of developing lung cancer 5 to 9 times over smoking alone, with the risk increasing with heavier smoking. Smokers with a work history in industries where asbestos was present should be especially concerned about quitting. Some studies suggest the risk to asbestos-exposed workers dropped as much as 50% within 5 years of kicking the habit.

@gpwlaw : Symptoms of lung cancer typically do not appear until the later stages of the disease – when the illness has begun to spread. Respiratory symptoms such as a chronic cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, hoarseness and coughing up blood are common indicators that may warrant a visit from your doctor. In some cases, most often with Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, symptoms are not strictly respiratory. According to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, loss of appetite and weight loss, headaches, bone pain/fractures and blood clots are all symptoms of lung cancer because the cancer can easily spread to other organs. In addition, colorectal cancers, the second deadliest cancer, have also been linked to asbestos exposure as well as throat (laryngeal) cancer. [Source: @americancancersociety: ]

@gpwlaw : In 2016, it's estimated that 158,080 Americans died from lung cancer. That's 433 people every day. Based on conservative estimates from the @environmentalworkinggroup, about 26 of these daily deaths are caused by asbestos exposure. That number may be much higher as asbestos-related deaths are not precisely recorded. If you are diagnosed with lung cancer, even if you smoked, consider your work history. Thousands of workers were exposed to asbestos on the job. Additionally, GPW has helped many clients who weren't even aware they were exposed to asbestos. November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. @gpwlaw There are 3 different types of . Non Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) makes up 80-85% of all lung cancer diagnoses. Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) makes up 10-15% and Carcinoid makes up 5% of all diagnosed lung cancers. Carcinoid, which makes up the least amount, is made up of neuroendocrine tumors. SCLC is made of up small cell carcinoma and combined cell carcinoma. Named for how the cells appear under a microscope, small cell carcinoma is often called “oat-cell” cancer. SCLC is often the most severe. NSCLC, the most common, has three types dependent on where the cancer is located on the lungs. Adenocarcinoma (outer lining), squamous cell carcinoma (near bronchus), and large cell carcinoma (any part of the lung).
