On March 20, 2005, at the height of the insurgency in Iraq, Sgt. Leigh Ann Hester was a team leader in a convoy operation that the 617th MP Company was conducting along ASR Detroit in the greater Baghdad area. They were searching for possible improvised explosive devices (IEDs) when 50 insurgents suddenly ambushed their convoy with AK-47s, RPKs, and rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) while using irrigation ditches and an orchard for cover. The complex attack resulted in the convoy being stuck in the kill zone. Hester and her troops had only one choice if they were to survive the attack: fight their way out and overcome the ambush. Outnumbered five to one, Hester directed her Mk-19 and M240B gunners to return fire into the orchard so that another element could flank. Hester then dismounted the vehicle and started advancing in the open, firing her M203 grenade launcher in an attempt to suppress the heavy enemy fire. She then joined her squad leader, Staff Sgt. Nein, and tossed two grenades into the enemy trench before entering and clearing. She engaged and killed three insurgents, and then moved onto the next trench and cleared that as well. At the end of the firefight, 27 insurgents were KIA, six WIA, and one was captured alive. A Silver Star is a rare award for anyone in the military, but especially so for a female service member. For her valorous actions in Iraq that day, she became the first woman since World War II to receive the Silver Star. Cheers to all the badass women out there! #internationalwomensday
