Our Breast Cancer Now Tissue Bank is the UK’s largest unique collection of high-quality breast tissue, breast cells and blood samples from breast cancer patients. When asked about the greatest challenges faced by breast cancer research, leading scientists told us that a lack of access to high-quality tissue was a major problem. We were determined to solve this, and established the Breast Cancer Now Tissue Bank in 2010. Now we have 5 dedicated tissue bank centres, with over 48,000 samples. Over 8,500 of these samples have already been allocated to research projects. Samples are being used to study many different aspects of breast cancer, such as identifying 'biomarkers' to predict how a patient will respond to treatment, broadening our understanding of the role of hormones and genetics in breast cancer. ➡️ If you want to read more about how it works, including donating breast tissue, click the link in bio. . . .

Meet Professor Nick Turner, who leads the Molecular Oncology Team at the @breastcancernow Toby Robins Research Centre @icr_london. 📄 You may have seen him on TV last Friday, giving his response to a news story about a @johnshopkinsu study on a new blood test that could be used to detect 8 types of cancer. “This paper is a step along the way to a possible to screen for cancer, and the data presented is quite convincing from a technical perspective”, he said. However, he pointed out that the test’s one percent false positive rate, "could be quite a concern for population screening. There could be a lot of people who are told they have cancer, who may not have it." Click on bio to read our response to the study in full. 💉

“I had felt so isolated when I was first diagnosed. But now, with the help of social media, I can put on one of my many shades of lipstick and say, kiss this, cancer." 💋⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Rhiannon, is supporting our campaign with @ghdhair She says: “I was just 32 when I found out that I had breast cancer. It was two weeks after my daughter’s second birthday. They told me I’d have to go through seven rounds of chemotherapy, a lumpectomy and then twenty rounds of radiotherapy.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Knowing all that was ahead of me, I had to find a way to brighten up my treatments. So, every time I went into hospital, I bought myself a new lipstick. It sounds small – but I love make-up, and it made me feel so much better. It hid how horrible the treatments made me feel, and I started sharing how much it helped me on my Instagram channel @thebigcandme⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Pretty soon, I started to hear from other women going through the same thing. The lipstick updates opened me up to a whole community – a massive online support network of other people going through cancer treatments."⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For every pouting selfie, like Rhiannon's, that is posted on your Instagram feed, ghd will donate £1 to Breast Cancer Now. What breasts are made of, and where and how cancer starts? 🤔 Breast tissue is found in the breast, upper chest and the armpit. Each breast contains 15-20 glands called lobes, where milk is produced. These lobes are connected to the nipple by tubes called ducts. Breast cancer usually begins within the lobes. (Click on bio to read more)
