'Forfeiture is a new work to accompany Terms in Still I Rise: Feminisms, Gender, Resistance, Act 2. It's a photocopy of a pencil drawing which shows Eurydice returning to Hades. The figure in this drawing is derived from a nude image of myself I captured on a webcam when I was 20. The cave is derived from a photgraph I took inside the Devil's Arse in the Peak District, England, last summer - a few days after my relationship ended.' - Jamie Crewe . "It looks quite explosive and aggressive, like something's been pent up inside" . "I disagree. It's quite calming like it's a stress relief" . "The way the figures are concealed make it seem sad and the wide open spaces are quite isolating" . "The woman isn't lost in the smoke. She's not completely covered and she's still the main focus" . "I find the colours quite positive. It's so bright it's hard to see it in a negative way" . "I like the top one. The colour overwhelms the area and makes it more personal towards the subject. I really like the juxtaposition" . A massive thanks to the students of Hillview School For Girls and their tutor, Joanne, for visiting Still I Rise today and giving us their thoughts on this week's spotlighted works by Judy Chicago. . All of the work at the DLWP is free to visit, seven days a week. Find out more about this exhibition on our website. @aceagrams

"In 1997 I contributed to a National Abortion Campaign publication, describing my experience of two abortions: one in 1966, before the Act decriminalised abortion, and the other in 1971, after the Act had been passed. I agreed to my name and a photograph of me being included. Even today and certainly then, it wasn’t easy to talk about abortion but I felt it was really important. I was worried about ‘going public’ but I campaigned for years for a woman’s right to choose, and felt it was important to speak out. I still do. Interestingly I wrote a letter about it to the local paper and found myself on the receiving end of some pretty nasty phone calls." - Ann Kramer, author and historian . Still I Rise highlights some incredible acts of resistance. We've been asking artists, curators and friends what their most meaningful acts of resistance have been and we'll be sharing their responses throughout the exhibition's time at DLWP. . Outlands Tour 5 artists: @eartheater Outlands is back at the Pavilion on Thursday 13 June with tour number 5: Fracture Patterns. Fracture Patterns is a live collaboration between UK artist duo Semiconductor and New York musician and producer Eartheater. Eartheater works across a multi-faceted practice that combines genre-breaking musical production with a singular visual aesthetic. Utilising multiple layers of vocals and a sonic palette that traverses both the analogue and digital to create rich and detailed compositions, engaging in noise, but moving above and beyond straightforward transgression, Eartheater allows her compositions to linger playfully and productively at the blurred edges between dissonance and harmony. "I started exploring the idea of openly female-centred art in 1968, with a series of pieces called Atmospheres. Before that, I had made paintings and sculptures intending to convey emotion through colour. But with my Atmospheres, the smoke provided a liberation from formal structure, while its colour was intended to feminise and soften the environment. This [Immolation, 1972] was taken in the California desert. At the time, a lot of monks in Vietnam had set fire to themselves to protest against the war and its expansion into Cambodia. I’d been doing a lot of research into women’s history and the practice of sati in India, where widows are forced to throw themselves into the flames of a funeral fire. So I was interested in the whole practice of immolation, forced and chosen. One could say up to that point women’s art and women's history had been immolated" - Judy Chicago, 2013 . Instagram Image by De La Warr Pavilion (@delawarr) with caption : "In the 1910s, Alice Constance Austin was commissioned by a lawyer named Job Harriman to design a city for 10,000 people," at The De La Warr Pavilion - 1992224661870763022

In the 1910s, Alice Constance Austin was commissioned by a lawyer named Job Harriman to design a city for 10,000 people, named Llano del Rio and owned and run by its workers. A complex infrastructure of underground tunnels contained electrical, gas, water and telephone lines, and a centralised kitchen would deliver hot meals that were to be eaten communally. Foldaway beds eliminated awkward cleaning spots, and heated floors rid homes of dusty carpets, liberating the city's inhabitants from housework. Llano del Rio was never realised, largely due to a lack of finances and an irrigation system that failed, but it is marked as an architectural vision of a city designed to not hide women away from public spaces. This model, which can be seen in our gallery, was made by Antigoni Goutakoli and is an example of one of Austin's adobe-style buildings. 'Hundreds of women-only consciousness-raising groups met regularly in the UK during the 1970s and early 1980s. We all met in our local groups to talk about our circumstances and our experiences as women, to share the frustrations of motherhood, isolation in the home, loss of independence, sexual harassment on the streets, our relationships, unequal pay, being defined as inferior to men, assumptions made about our sexuality, our status and our availability. We realised through this process that working together made us more confident and therefore more powerful and determined to make changes... It was in this dynamic, creative and politically inspiring environment that we started to produce the posters.’ . “If a bad actor can be elected President, why not a good drag queen?” Mused Joan Jett Blakk, the alter ego of artist Terence Smith, in 1992 when, as part of the Queer National Party, she launched her campaign for the top job. Joan Jett Blakk for President by Joan Jett Blakk, 1992, has been spotlighted in the @guardian’s Anatomy Of An Artwork. The work is currently at DLWP as part of our exhibition, Still I Rise: Feminisms, Gender, Resistance, Act 2.
