We inhabit this planet and therefore only we can change it for the better. As long as we think of “we” as others, we will never change anything. But if I think of “we” as myself then I understand who is responsible for making the world a better place. . wearing @aloyoga

In my last post, I stated that yoga is a state of being not a state of doing. A few of you said it's also a state of doing. That's also true. It is both, and to some, it's only a system of exercise and particular poses. And this is also true. (Although, I don't see it that way.) Yoga, like most words in Sanskrit, does not translate easily into English. . Most words we fundamentally agree on the definition. However, there are many words that we agree on the definition yet we have our own very different interpretations for the words. Such as God, attachment, faith, religion, flat white, love, fear, etc. Yoga is one of these words that many people have their own meaning of the word, and for some, it's drastically different. . For the entire time that I have been posting on social media, I have received comments that what I am doing is not yoga. My last partner pose, someone commented, "Acrobatics is not yoga," so I replied, "Can you tell which poses are yoga?" The word "yoga" comes from the root word "yuj" which means to join, connect, harness and it describes a system of spiritual, mental and physical disciplines that originated in India. Like most things in the west, we took what we liked and threw away the rest. . But who am I to say I understand what this word really means, I can only say that I understand what this word means to me. For me, yoga is the unification of being, one with self and one with the universe. It is the result of being present, to see things as they are, not as I am seeing them. To understand the truth of life which is the here and now. Poses on their own are not yoga but the practice of the poses can help you find your yoga. I believe it is impossible to look at any pose whether it's on IG or in "Light on Yoga" and say that is yoga or isn't. It's the intention and the internal connection that makes a shape yoga, not the shape. For me, yoga will always be an internal "being" rather than an external "doing". . Yoga is a state of being not a state of doing. We do not practice yoga; if yoga means union or connection, how can practice that, you are connected or you’re not. We practice asana, pranayama, meditation, Bhakti, mindful living, etc. These practices are the paths we take to ultimately realize the path we’re already on. Through the practices, yoga is experienced as the truth and we are connected and in union with truth. . Wearing @aloyoga Photo @sfreneenyc

Beauty is beauty because we choose to see it as beautiful. It is completely subjective to its seer. Great artist find the beauty in everything, the mundane, the grungy, the offbeat, the pristine and the stunning. When you view everything and everyone as beautiful, everything in your life will be beautiful. The same is true of the opposite. . Beauty is a choice of how you label it not a condition of the object, place or person. When you really start to see everything as beautiful is when you release that it has nothing to do with what it is that you're seeing but that everything is a reflection of the heart. . making beautiful shapes with @meliniseri while wearing @aloyoga . 📷 by @sfreneenyc Thanks for your eye for finding beauty where most don’t

We are at the finish line but thinking we are standing at the starting point. It's taking me a long time to realize that I'm not at the start. It's not because of my accomplishments, achievements, or practice that has brought me to the finish; it's the reality in truth that we are standing at the finish. We can look forward to a false reality or fantasy and think of all the things that we have left to do before we arrive at a fictional destination but because life is here and now, we will never live in this future. But our starting point is real, and it is from this point that we journeyed to this moment. The moment that continuously unfolds into infinity and the same place where we stand, always at the pinnacle of our journey. . What we see is often only the finished polished result. Rarely do we see (or at least rarely do I show) all the failed attempts or less than perfect try’s. It’s very natural to want to show your best. This often means not showing all the rest. But for this post I wanted to show all my attempts to get the one video that I was willing to share. And even this video wasn’t what I wanted, but I was so tired from doing it so many times that it wasn’t going to get any better. The real point that I want to make is that it’s not fake to show your best, and that nobody’s best comes without a ton of practice and failed attempts. . Swipe over to see all my attempts. wearing @aloyoga

Eternity is not on a never-ending timeline but in this singular moment with all life, change, creation, and death, unfolding forever in it. We exist as the part of this eternal moment as our lives unfold in the present. Everything in this moment will move in and out of existence, the point in which it does will still be in this eternal moment. . This moment is a window into the forever changing experience. What is in the window will continuously change, but itself remains the unchangeable point in which everything exists. To find the truth we merely start looking through the window. . The key to arm balances is creating stability. I like to think of stability as strength without effort. Stability comes when everything is aligned and balanced. Every arm balance has its own unique structure that lends to the effortlessness of the pose. When you discover this about the pose, it becomes a place to rest rather than a place to struggle. . A person born blind will never know darkness. . Our perceptions are relative to our interpretation of our own experiences of life. All things only exist by our understanding of the opposite or its variable; good is defined by bad, light by dark, color by other colors. Without the opposing perspective there isn't an understanding of existence. . We often try to understand other people's perspective based on our own experiences. It can be from a beautiful place of empathy but oftentimes we lack the experiential perspective to understand. We might feel bad for a blind person because we think they are in the dark and missing light based on our perception. Our perception makes us think we know best based on our experiences and understanding and it makes it easy to want to push our opinions, beliefs and often times our fears on others. . We can use empathy to gain understanding but not experience. Putting yourself in someone else's shoes is almost like putting yourself in a seat of judgement. As people we have a need to understand but at a point we must realize that we can never truly understand someone else's experiences or perspective. It's not my place to push my experience or perspective on someone else, only to share love with those looking to receive it. . Wearing @aloyoga
