Did you vote today? In addition to voting (go do it if you have not already!) we can also vote with our forks. Each fall, I make the commitment to enter the wild country of Wyoming and pursue wild game. My hunting license and taxes from the sale of hunting equipment helps fund the conservation and future of these wild animals. If I work hard enough, I have the opportunity to take a life, bringing home healthy meat for my friends and family. It’s an opportunity I do not take lightly, which is why I'm this year and every year. There’s nothing more American than our Public Lands and the wildlife which thrive upon them, lets keep it that way. . . . . .

Can one love wildlife yet also hunt them? I try to answer this question on most of my trips with @jacksonholeecotours. You can hear more about bridging the gap between hunters and non hunters in my interview with @mikeadamshunts check the link in bio or from my story. . . . . .

Priorities. One of these elk is working on gaining up to 50 lbs of pure fat to survive the winter. The loud one is actively losing weight, making him more susceptible to starvation, disease, or predation despite his large size and antlers (which stay on longer as an evolutionary response to predators). The third in the middle is just confused about why the big guy won’t leave it and mom alone... . . . . . @meateatertv @backcountryhunters

Free Ranging Bison are limited to small herds in places like Yellowstone, Grand Teton, the Henry Mountains of Utah and a few other scattered locations. It's a fragment of a historic range which reached well into Northern Canada, south into Mexico, and across most of the continental U.S. May they roam free again. . . . . .

Fall foliage, and a few cinnamon black bears to go with it. We've been seeing lots of bear activity both inside and out of the park, a good reminder to always carry and know how to use bear spray. Though black bears are generally not dangerous to people, grizzlies often attack to defend themselves first, leading to deadly encounters. Though I do not currently carry a firearm specifically as grizzly defense I could see using one as a last resort should bear spray (over 90% effective) fail. Be bear aware. . . . . .

It's been a tough couple of years for great gray owls in Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. This owlet and its 3 siblings were from one of just a few known successful nests. It was quite an exciting moment to hear its begging call from deep in the woods as we walked by. . . . . .

It's that time of year. I grew up watching elk bugle in Rocky Mountain National Park with family. We didn't hunt, or know anyone who did for that matter so this was one of the few places that we could see this amazing behavior that sends elk hunters into a frenzy in the fall. Today I get to share this amazing phenomena with guests of @jacksonholeecotours , and, on my days off later this month ,I too will be chasing elk in the National Forest as a hunter. Humans have been hunter gatherers for the vast majority of our existence and for me pursuing elk is just as much about connecting with that primordial part of humanity as the opportunity to fill my freezer with healthy organic free range meat. That and here in Wyoming we get to share incredible hunting opportunities with predators like wolves, grizzlies, and mountain lions, all of whom have lived on this landscape for far longer than we have. I Can't wait! . . . . .

These two mule deer fawns spent the summer feasting on fresh plants growing out of the Berry Creek Burn Area between Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. This fall, they may be part of one of the longest known, yet also endangered, migrations in the Americas, traveling over 200 miles south to Wyoming's Red Desert. . Recently published research shows that these migrations are learned behaviors, and if they are not passed down through the generations, they disappear. Thats why conservation organizations like @thetrcp are opposing the current proposal by the @USinterior to push oil and gas leases through within the migration corridor. You can read my recent LTE on the subject from the LINK IN BIO, better yet contact @govmattmead at governor@wyo.gov and @wygameandfish (307) 777-4600 and share your support for Wyoming's great wildlife migrations. . . . . .

I've never met a scientist who wasn't humbled by the mysteries around them and curious to learn more. In a few days I'll be trekking 50 miles across across the heart of Yellowstone National Park with this one! We'll be joined by my father, who along with mom, started this wild lifestyle I live with trips to Rocky Mountain National Park and other Public Lands across the West. At nearly 70 years old, dad hasn't slowed down much since then, just tell him there's dark beer at the next campsite and he will charge off down the trail! @kira_cassidy . . . .
