Africa’s protected area (PA) network contain some of the most iconic wilderness areas on the planet, and are home to the World’s most impressive assemblage of large mammals. PAs form the cornerstone of efforts to conservation lions and many other species. However, Africa’s PAs are under threat from chronic under-funding. A multi-organizational study led by @pantheracats and featuring LRF Director (@petelindseyafrica), shows that annual funding shortfalls for PAs in lion range are at least US$1 billion in extent. Without urgent financial support, we can expect significant ongoing declines in the numbers of lions and other wildlife, even within PAs. However, if Africa’s PAs were adequately funded, they could effectively secure the future for lions and many other species. Investing in PAs is good for people. PAs form the basis for expanding tourism industries, which can grow and diversify economies, and create jobs. In addition, PAs also provide a range of environmental services that are essential to humanity, such as the protection of watersheds and storage of carbon. We urge the world to step up to the plate and provide the support needed to secure these incredible global assets. Click the link in our bio to read the article. Photo: @petelindseyafrica

Lions are Africa's largest carnivore. With rapidly growing human populations in Africa, humans and lions are coming into contact with each other more often. This can lead to human-wildlife conflict as lions sometimes prey on livestock, leading local communities to kill lions to protect their herds. The LRF is working across organizations and communities to reduce these retaliatory killings so both humans and lions can thrive as development increases across Africa. Just another sunset or the closing credits for Africa’s lions? In the wildlife areas most visited by tourists, lions are a regular sighting. This creates the misconception that lions are doing just fine. The reality is that their numbers have declined by half in the last 25 years or so. The LRF supports a wide range of conservation projects around Africa designed to protect lions, their habitats and prey. Central to our philosophy is the conviction that conserving Africa’s wildlife will benefit the continents people and economies.. Photo @petelindseyafrica

Pendjari National Park in Benin is part of a larger protected area complex that holds 90% of West Africa's lions. It's critical that this area has sufficient law enforcement so lion populations in this area are able to recover and grow. @africanparksnetwork is doing great work in Pendjari understanding current lion population sizes and their movements to ensure lions in the complex are protected. Poaching and snaring in Serengeti National Park is a serious threat to lions. Not only do lions get caught in snares, but it kills lion prey and reduces their food supply. Thanks to our supporters, we've provided funds to @frankfurt.zoological.society to aid in removing poaching snares and providing veterinary drugs to dart and treat lions caught in snares. Lions are disappearing at a rapid pace throughout Africa. In fact, lion populations have declined by half in just 25 years. A year ago, @wildnetorg and the @leonardodicapriofdn launched the Lion Recovery Fund to reverse this trend by supporting the best projects to bring lions back. You can be part of this journey to . Lions are a resilient species. They have great potential to recover rapidly if threats to the species are tackled, and both their prey and habitats are protected. A paper published this month documents lion numbers are recovering in Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park, where wildlife had been decimated by the country’s civil war. Wildlife is now recovering thanks to effective park management, law enforcement, and community engagement. This study by Paula Bouley (@seagoose1) found that although lions are recovering, they are still threatened from bushmeat poaching. The Gorongosa Restoration Projection is tackling this threat head on and removed more than 12,000 snares and 300 gin traps during 2015-2016. This project depicts our belief that we can collectively recover lions with the right combinations of expertise, investment, and effort. Photo: Moritz Stragholz @mostphotography

A lion rests in Kafue National Park in Zambia. The LRF has invested in the work of @musekeseconservation in Kafue to develop intensive protection zones. These zones will help tackle bushmeat poaching within the park. Bushmeat poaching limits the number of prey and, as a result, suppresses lion populations. Photo: @musekeseconservation

A lion locks eyes with a photographer in Benin's Pendjari National Park. This park holds a population of 70-100 lions, but has the potential to hold 400-500 lions. We've provided funds to @africanparksnetwork to increase law enforcement in Pandjari National Park and to study lion population sizes and movements. It's our hope that these collaborative efforts can help lions, like this one, thrive in Benin. Photo: @africanparksnetwork

Fact Friday! Lions once roamed the globe, living in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Northern India. Due to loss of habitat, reduced prey, and human-wildlife conflict, lions are now primarily isolated to small pockets in Africa.
