ICYMI: Yesterday, we unveiled #NOLA’s new Real Time Crime Center. This $5M+ investment will allow trained video technicians to provide instantaneous information to public safety officials in the field to help solve crimes faster. The Center features a 180-degree video monitoring wall to provide situational awareness at all times. Other features include a briefing room fully equipped w/ video presentation technology, a training room and work stations for detectives. We are inviting residents & businesses to connect public-facing security cameras to this Crime Center by visiting http://safecamnola.com. The activation of this Real Time Crime Center represents a major milestone in the implementation of the $40M Citywide Public Safety Plan We announced in January.
Yesterday, we kicked off National Parks & Rec Conference in #NOLA w/ a celebration at @nordcommission Lemann Playground on Lafitte Greenway. When I took office in 2010, I made a commitment to rebuild NORD into a world class recreation department. We’ve invested $150M. Since 2010, New Orleans Recreation Development Commission has gone from 4 rec centers to 12, 8 pools to 15--and the best is yet to come. Special thanks to @nrpa for building a brand new playground here on the Lafitte Greenway. Thank you to the lovely Joe Brown cheerleaders who put on a special performance at the celebration. This is more than just a playground. This is a community.
I had a great time on Saturday spending time with over 100 neighborhood leaders from across #NOLA. We're coming together to find solutions to our tough problems. Our Chief Resilience Officer Jeff Hebert talked to neighborhood leaders about how #NOLA can learn to live with water. Leaders used the TopoBox to demonstrate what storm surge would do to different types of land elevations at the Neighborhood Leaders Roundtable. This Roundtable is another example of the last 7 years of collaboration between government & neighborhood leaders.
This weekend, I even met future NOLA for Life Midnight Basketball player Ellery.
Since 2012 NOLA for Life Midnight Basketball has provided safe recreation, resources and mentoring to over 13,000 young men of NOLA. For 15 seasons, Midnight Basketball has been a place for the entire community to support our young men @dominos. Thank you @q93fm DJ @wildwayne for hosting every single season of Midnight Basketball and mentoring so many young people.
On Saturday, I was proud to join @thenbpa to award the first ever NOLA for Life Midnight Basketball Scholarships. Congrats to our scholarship recipients - Trenton, Narvin & Cornell - our next success stories! Cornell has played in NOLA for Life Midnight Basketball for 6 seasons. He is using his @thenbpa scholarship to help attend Southern University at New Orleans.
Thank you to everyone who came out for Ceasefire New Orleans PeaceFest this weekend. Proud of the work Ceasefire New Orleans is doing to interrupt violence and change behaviors in our city. I appreciate the work of New Orleans Police Department and New Orleans Fire Department to keep our city safe! #PeaceFest
Today, I joined @gnofoundation, Household of Faith, NOLA Tree Project to announce a major donation to our #NOLAPayItForward fund for those affected by #Harvey. With Greater New Orleans Foundation, we raised another $100K for #NOLAPayItForward to support our local non-profits helping with #Harvey relief efforts. Pastor & First Lady Barriere of Household of Faith Church are one of many #NOLA organizations who have stepped up to support Texas in #Harvey relief.
Today, I was thrilled to be in the Central City neighborhood to launch the Good 2 Go initiative to increase fresh foods in all communities. This new initiative ensures that more corner stores are delivering healthy and affordable foods for real people like our seniors at Guste. This impactful program is an example of the New New Orleans way where we see a need, develop innovative solutions and deliver. Thank you New Orleans Police Department 6th District and Commander Ronnie Stevens for helping deliver this program for your residents. #OneTeam
