”The Moderna Exhibition – With the Future Behind Us” offers sober and intimate reflections on Swedish society today, on a natural world that is no longer what it once was, and a future that appears to have already begun. The exhibition presents work of nearly forty artists connected to the Swedish art scene. (Link in bio.) 20 October 2018 – 6 January 2019 Image: Eric Magassa, From THE LOST SERIES, GÖTEBORG, 2017

Water lilies and other flora and fauna flourish behind the glass as though transported there from the water lily pond at Claude Monet’s home in the French town of Giverny. Just as Monet constructed his own pond, Pierre Huyghe has laid the foundations of a closed ecosystem of his own in this work. Pierre Huyghe, Nymphéas Transplant (Fall 1917), 2014, in the Collection.

“I was gripped with great anxiety coupled with narcotic pleasure by this jumble of murder weapons, suicide pictures, detergent boxes, giant flowers, music and Rorschach-like movie stills...Who doesn’t long for grass and cows and milk after being psyched like that!” Quote from Skånska Dagbladet’s (Swedish daily) review of the 1968 Andy Warhol exhibition. “Warhol 1968” – an exhibition about an exhibition is on view until 17 February 2018. ”Janus Fleuri” is one of Louise Bourgeois’ most iconic works. This bronze sculpture was shown in Sigmund Freud’s London home, where it hung above his famous divan. It has been interpreted to be a metaphor for the two-faced Greek god Janus, and expresses a hermaphroditic dual gender. Louise Bourgeois, Janus Fleuri, 1968, on display in the Collection.

“As a word loses its meaning if repeated long enough, his images eventually lose any vestige of meaning that they may originally have had. All that remains is the ‘surface’ /.../ Warhol has filled me with distaste.” Dagens Nyheter (Swedish daily). When Andy Warhol’s first solo exhibition opened at Moderna Museet in Stockholm 1968 the opinions of Sweden’s art critics differed widely. “Warhol 1968” on show until 17 February 2019. The then art critic Olle Granath worked on the Andy Warhol exhibition at Moderna Museet in Stockholm 1968. He recalls that the museum director Pontus Hultén needed a pithy quote from Warhol: “’Which one?’ Olle asked. ‘In the future everybody will be world famous for fifteen minutes,” Pontus said. ‘If I had seen that in the material I would have remembered,’ Olle replied. ‘If he didn’t actually say it, he very well could have, so we’ll put that in.’ Pontus said. And that is how perhaps the most famous Warhol quote came about. “Warhol 1968” on show until 17 February 2019.

Thomas Ruff has worked with a technique where he downloads images and enlarges the images and the pixels. If you stand close to an image, it appears to be completely abstract. If you stand further back the subject-matter begins to emerge. Ruff’s downloaded images of various war zones contain a critique of how the images are used by the media. Instead of emphasising the closeness of the images to their subject, he points to the distance, by enlarging the pixels. We are not looking at “reality” but at a digital reproduction that can be experienced and interpreted in its own right. Thomas Ruff, jpeg td02, 2006, in the Collection.

On 8 February, 1968, two days before the opening of Andy Warhol’s first solo museum exhibition at Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the museum director, Pontus Hultén, sent a telegram to Warhol in New York: “WE CAN PAY FOR THREE TICKETS IF YOU CAN HELP EXHIBITION ECONOMY BY GIVING ONE MORE SILKSCREEN STOP SHOW LOOKS VERY GOOD STOP FILMS HAVE NOT YET ARRIVED PLEASE BRING SPARE LOOPS IF POSSIBLE STOP”. “There’s no denying that Warhol is an intense, disillusioned truth-seeker.” Aftonbladet (The daily Aftonbladet). When Andy Warhol’s first solo exhibition opened at Moderna Museet in Stockhom 1968 criticism for pro-American propaganda was anticipated – but the reactions were divided. “Warhol 1968” is an exhibition about this exhibition. It also attempts to explore the complexity of Warhol’s oeuvre from the perspective of the pivotal year of 1968. Warhol 1968 on show 15 september 2018–17 February 2019
