“Peace is the beauty of life. It is sunshine. It is the smile of a child, the love of a mother, the joy of a father, the togetherness of a family.” - Menachem Begin — Today is my baby’s birthday!!!! There are no words to describe how much love I have for this little person. Everyday I learn something new about love, fatherhood and family because of my son. He is my sunshine, he is my motivation, he is my heart, he is my absolute everything. — I love you so very much Mio and I’m so excited that your having “the greatest birthday ever.” May you continue to shine your beautiful light upon the world and bring the utmost tears of absolute joy and wonder to my life. Te amo mucho. Papa — #happybirthday#fatherhood#family#disneyland#love
Yesterday I spent the day with the women & men who were instrumental in writing El Plan de Santa Barbara, a foundational document of the Chicano Movement & the guiding document of M.E.Ch.A., a leading nationwide student organizing group. — It was an emotional roller coaster of a day. A day where I had the privilege of hearing from those who sacrificed so much for myself & so many others to have a chance at a higher education. A day where I heard stories of liberation, loss & self-determination. Of Third World Coalitions, United Fronts & a unwavering desire and commitment to fighting for raza students. — It was a difficult day for me because this person in the picture is no other than my father Ismael “Mayo” de la Rocha. A Mexicano from the sierras of Chihuahua who somehow someway made it all the way to the beaches of Santa Barbara & was one of those brown & black faces who played a critical role in the student movement of UCSB and beyond. My father like so many others gave so much for us to have the opportunities that we have today. And yesterday reminded me that movements are made up of people, everyday people, janitors, teachers, parents, youth, everyone who knows deep down inside that a new world is not only possible, but is being birthed because we are still alive, we are still here. — Papa, you were so present yesterday that it was scary. Your name, your contributions, your picture, your spirit brought me to tears, to joy, to loss, to memory, to you. I am so happy to share with you that your primo, my Tio Castulo endowed a new scholarship in your name for Chicana/o students in Chicana/o Studies who are giving back to the community. To say that I was a mess would be an understatement because I know how much you’ve done for so many without ever asking for credit or acknowledgment, but just because you saw yourself in all of us poor, brown boys and girls. How you did so so much for everyone else at the expense of your own health. That you left us fighting to your last breathe for the inherent value and dignity that we all have. — Thank you so much Tio for this ever lasting gift. No words could express my appreciation. I love you papa & your legacy lives on.
I still remember the phone call. It was probably super early in the morning or super late at night. The one and only @osopepatrisse called me and asked if @revolveimpact would be interested in creating what would now be known as @justicelanow — We would integrate arts and culture. We would invite new allies and voices. We would have a strategic inside/outside strategy. And most importantly we would build off the decades worth of tireless work of advocates and groups like @lacanetwork@dignityandpowernow@youthjusticela@curbprisons@criticalresistance and so many others. — September 2017. We launched. 100 jail beds dropped in front of the LA County Board of Supervisors. No one said it was possible. But we believed. We organized. We all played our roles. And we kept moving. — February 2019. We did it you all!!!! We stopped a jail from being built. We changed hearts and minds. We redirected resources. We centered love so much in our work that our family members would no longer be treated in cages but in hospitals. — I love you @osopepatrisse@cocosouthla@dignityandpowernow@youthjusticela@curbprisons@justleadershipusa@criticalresistance@translatinacoalition and everyone whose a part of @justicelanow This is our victory. This is people power. This is how we win. Onward.
United States Senator Kamala Harris. Sunday, January 27, 2019. Oakland, CA, Wakanda. First Official Campaign Gathering. — One of many incredible quotes that I would like to share with you, “When you put children in cages don’t call that border security, that’s a human rights abuse.” — And so happy to witness Kamala quote Frederick Douglas, “To love the religion of Jesus is to hate the religion of the slave master.” — And to close with a smile as big as the picture represents, “I am not perfect, but I will always speak with decency and moral clarity and treat all people with dignity and respect.” — Gloves are off, vision has been set, let’s fight and win back the soul of our democracy.
Now is the time! Now is the time to end mass incarceration! We are the teachers. The mighty mighty teachers. Fighting for justice. And an education. — As the son of a former @aftunion Teachers Union President, I am proud to stand in solidarity with @utlanow and the tens of thousands of teachers who are demanding that we have smaller class sizes, more nurses, librarians and counselors and that the @laschools pay our teachers a dignified salary. — As a parent of an #LAUSD student, I stand in solidarity with the tens of thousands of parents who know firsthand that our children deserve better. — As a person whose committed to supporting unions and the human rights of all workers, I and my family, are #strikeready and will do all we can to support this historic strike. — Thank you Alex Caputo-Pearl and all of the UTLA leadership, @utlanow and all the teachers, parents, as well as all the students who are showing our collective power. We will win. La lucha continua. #handsoffourschools#utlastrong#wearela#kidsfirst#stopthebillionaireprivatizers#schoolsnotprisons
Since I was a little kid, music has always been my escape and refuge. From playing in punk bands as a twelve year old boy at the Mayfair Theatre in Ventura to playing around the world with just an acoustic guitar and a dream, 2019 is the year of me finally releasing new music. — So I’m spending my last day of 2018 mixing a new song with @alonzobeas - one of my best friends in the universe and one of the most talented and creative people to ever breathe. So get ready world, GIFT meets MdlR coming soon. #Early2019 — #BacksTo2018#BringInTheNewYear#newmusic#followyourpurpose
I know that this is way late in terms of posting, but I wanted to share some pics from @summit#la18 where we got to screen DOLORES, an incredible documentary on the life of @doloreshuerta - if you haven’t seen the film please do so because it’s seriously one of the greatest films ever made. It will rock you to your core and raises awareness of one of the leading figures in United States, and in fact, world history. — It was a magical day where I personally laughed, cried and was inspired at the courage of this icon and the countless women and men who sacrifice day in and day out for the betterment of humanity. The entire day, and the film in particular, made me think about my father and the many unknown freedom fighters who remain nameless in classroom history books, but who nonetheless, were critical to transforming racist laws, policies and culture. — If you can, please consider donating to the @doloreshuertafdn before the end of the year so they could continue to screen the film and do the critical work in the Central Valley and across the country. They are one of the leading organizing groups in the state of #ca who are training and mobilizing tens of thousands of everyday residents to take back power in their schools and communities. — Thank you @audrey_buchanan and @thewoodsproductions for being the greatest partners, thank you Peter Bratt for your artistry, thank you @cristela9 for your friendship, thank you @summit for providing the much needed space, thank you @doloreshuertafdn for your tireless work, thank you @doloreshuerta Maria Elena Chavez and Emilio Huerta for your willingness to share on stage, thank you @hopeleigh for your photos, and thank you to everyone who continues to organize for a new world. #happyholidays#summitseries#bringin2019
Today I celebrate the birth of my incredible wife Claudia. No words could ever express how much love and appreciation I have for this woman. From saying yes to this crazy Chicano from the 805 over ten years ago to being the mother of our two amazing children, Claudia has not only become my best friend, but also my hero. She exemplifies the kind of courage, patience and intelligence that I only strive to one day achieve. — Babe, Happy Birthday! May today bring you all the joy and happiness that you absolutely deserve. I can’t wait to spend many more years together here and in the eternal bliss of forever. I love you. — #happybirthday#iloveyou

“Mi gente ¡Ustedes! Lo más grande de este mundo.” - Hector Lavoe — Last night I got to witness the pure genius of el maestro Mark Anthony. In a time where Latinx people are being demonized by the US Government I felt the greatest sense of pride in being Chicano and seeing a true master of his craft sing songs of love, passion and pride in being a part of the expansive and beautiful Latinx diaspora. — But the greatest part of last night was seeing my wifey be in pure heaven. Salsa and Mark Anthony have been the soundtrack of her life and seeing the utter happiness on her face will be a memory that I will cherish forever. — Thank you Mark Anthony for providing solace and joy in this much needed time. Thank you for reminding us of the beauty of our mere presence. Thank you for holding down Puerto Rico in a time where the motherland still needs attention, love and resources. #love#puertorico#markanthony#legend — Mi gente ¡Ustedes! Lo más grande de este mundo Siempre me hacen sentir Un orgullo profundo — Los llamé ¡Vengan conmigo! No me preguntaron dónde Orgulloso estoy de ustedes
Look at this bad ass 100 year old Mexicano!!!! — I love you abuelo and am so thankful for all that you’ve done for our family. You are the patriarch and the reason why we all made it to the states in one piece. Thank you for all of your sacrifice and willingness to do anything and everything to make sure that you’re family was always provided for and taken care of. — #happythanksgivng#family#mexicoporvida#chihuahua
