Whatcha looking at Papa? Absolute stud! — The look that my son gives me when I’m taking too long in an art gallery and then he answers me by saying, “Papa, I’m looking like this because it’s not even cool.”

Honored to be a part of the initiative, the largest creative collaboration in US history with the purpose of getting people out to vote for tomorrow’s historic mid term elections. — is a call to action. It’s an art centered project to inspire as many people as possible to get involved in the democratic process, whether that’s by voting if you’re eligible to, holding tough conversations with your friends and family, volunteering for and with local organizations, making phone calls, sending texts, knocking on doors, and/or making art that pushes those who can vote to vote tomorrow and to get involved in grassroots organizing year around. — Thank you to @hankwillisthomas the artists and everyone who is doing everything in their power to increase turnout and civic participation. Despite what may - or may not happen - tomorrow I am motivated and driven by the incredible organizing happening in neighborhoods all across the country. — Let’s continue building power, let’s continue making history, and let’s continue doing everything in our power to transform ourselves, our country and our world. Saturday, October 13, 2018. Approximately 2pm-8pm. New York City. This was the day that a movement of liberation continued to quietly blossom and evolve. This was a day of truth telling and healing. This was a day of fearlessness and understanding. This was that day! — Thank you @massbailout for bringing together some of the fiercest women leaders this world has ever known. Thank you @rfkhumanrights @revolveimpact @think_rubix @wpa_nyc for creating the space for pure and utter magic to occur. Thank you to the cast members of @oitnb especially @dianexguerrero @sheisdash & @alysiareiner for your willingness to use your platform and influence for change. And a huge shoutout to @ifeomasinachi_ike for your brilliance Arrisa Hall from @nationalbailout for your decades worth of work @monicaramirezdc from @campesinasunite for all that you do for so many communities and thank you so much to all the fierce advocates from @wpa_nyc Pricilla from @justleadershipusa @exodus_transitional_community and everyone else who participated in the conversation and filming. — Yesterday was much needed and the perfect way to celebrate the half way point of an action to free hundreds of our family members and friends caged in Rikers Island. Yesterday was a reminder of the power of our interconnected movements. Yesterday was a day that history will indeed remember.

The following pictures are of my cousins and I celebrating the life and passing of my cousin Paul John Vasquez. I have a lot to say but I’m still processing so much from the funeral and from his life in general. —- My cousin’s life taught me valuable lessons about mental health and addiction. He (probably more than anyone else) tested my belief in forgiveness and acceptance. He was the living embodiment of a survivor of trauma and someone that forced me to confront my own thoughts around social justice and love. — I love you cuz. We had a difficult and complicated relationship but you were and are family. You’ll always be one of the first people to break my heart, but also one of the first people to make me laugh. You will be missed and now you - and I - are finally at peace. —- To my Vasquez family know that you will always be my heart. You inspire me in ways that I will never be able to fully articulate. Thank you for being you. Thank you for showing me resiliency in action. Thank you for loving me, my mama and my brother. Thank you for just being family. I love you.

Rarely do you get to witness and be a part of history. Today was the launch of - the largest bail out in a single location in the history of the United States. — Today @KerryKennedyRFK from @RFKHumanRights and @monifabandele from @MomsRising posted the first bail in an action that will expose how New York City - and America - continues to criminalize poverty. No one should be caged in jail simply because they are too poor to afford bail, no one. — The goal of the : Freedom for 400 women and 50 children from the notoriously violent Rikers Island. Freedom to allow our loved ones to come home and be with their families. Freedom for hundreds of mothers to be home with their babies. Freedom for family members who shouldn’t have been caged in the first place. — My family and I have been directly impacted by the horrors of mass incarceration. I recently lost a cousin who spent the last decade cycling in and out of jail...so this action is extremely personal to me. I - and so many of us - know how this system does everything in its power - and by design - to steal the lives of predominantly black and brown bodies. But today is a resounding call to action. Today is an act of liberation for the countless families who will not stop until we end the destruction of mass incarceration. Today is a massive statement to every elected legislator that poverty is not a crime but what we do to those who endure poverty is the real crime. —- Thank you to the generations of activists who have been using bail outs as a tool for liberation for decades. Thank you to all the formerly incarcerated groups who have been leading the movement to create a world without jails and prisons. Thank you to @justleadershipusa @vocalnewyork @katalcenter @RFKHumanRights @revolveimpact @think_rubix and everyone who made today possible. And a big thank you to everyone involved and whose supporting the beginning of a critically important action in the fight to end mass incarceration.

Today I celebrate another year around the sun and have been thinking a lot about social change, relationships, the future, the past, and what matters most to me. — I’ve spent most of my life trying to make change often times at the expense of my own health and wellness. Too many of us know that we could do better as a country, global society and as a people. The result is we burn out, we get sick, and we don’t see our families as much as we should. So I’ve decided to give myself the gift of what Audre Lourde, Gloria Anzaldua and so many other great icons have taught us: that self care is one of the most radical acts that we could do in the face of injustice. — So my gift to you, to me, is love, radical love. The kind of love that hurts but is kind. The kind of love that empowers and strengthens. The kind of love needed to transform ourselves and the world into the people and places that we know is possible. My hope is that you/we take care of y/ourselves because it’s in taking care of our own health that we will indeed accomplish the impossible. — So thank you creator for another year. Thank you to my mother and brother who mean the absolute world to me. We have gone through so much together the last couple of years without my father but through it all they were and are the first (along with my wife and children) who hold my tears, celebrate my joys and continue to love me despite everything. ... So on my day of birth I say I love you to everyone who has made my life more fulfilling, more honest and more impactful as I enter into what I hope will be the greatest year of my life.

Mio and his cousins made the big screen at the game!

My heart’s exploding, broken, nervous, scared but timidly hopeful on my baby’s first day of kindergarten. The saying that “time flies” or that they “grow up so fast” is so freakin true! I’m pretty sure that I’m having a more difficult time than he is but man is growing up hard for me.

Those that know me know that I absolutely 💯 LOVE Prince. I got “Most Likely to Impersonate Prince” in High School and next to U2, Prince has inspired more than any other artist in my life. — So after an incredible evening celebrating @mooremaya launching Win With Justice alongside some of the greatest female 🏀 players in the world in the purple city of Minneapolis, I had no other choice but to go visit and pay my respect to the incredible genius at Paisely Park! — It was so surreal and the perfect ritual to do after last nights total full blood moon lunar eclipse, the longest lunar eclipse in history. — It was so empowering to visit a place of pure beauty and magic. A place where some of the most iconic songs were written. A place built by a person who lived life on his own terms and redefined everything from sexuality to fashion to the music that will always serve as the soundtrack to my life.

This picture was taken over three years ago when you were still with us. Days before we were gonna celebrate your birthday like we are today. Days before you went into the hospital for what was supposed to be a simple back surgery, but then never returned back home with us. — Papa, I don’t know what to say except that I am grateful for having you as long as I did. You were, and still are, forever present in my parenting, in my organizing, and in my love for our family and our broader humanity. You and mama were my first and best teachers that any child/student could ask for and I am so eternally grateful for that. — So on this day I wish you a Happy Birthday. Today I will smoke a cigar in your memory and hold mama as tightly as I can. Today I will take the time to sit in silence and remember you and all the lessons that you have taught me. — Days like today, and days like next week when we remember another year of you not being physically with us, brings up so many mixed emotions for me. But through it all I take some semblance of solace in knowing that your love lives within me and everyone that you touched. I love you Papa. I miss you. And I celebrate your beautiful birthday today.
