When little Mahdi was discharged from the hospital following a heart transplant, he was greeted by a standing ovation from his father’s NYPD family in blue. In a social media post, Officer Saidul Islam’s wife expressed her gratitude to all those who have helped her family through this difficult time:‬ “I want to thank you all for your prayers and support for Mahdi. I want to thank my husband’s job, the Transportation Bureau, for helping us throughout the entire process, mentally and financially, as well as donating vacation days to be with my son.” Feel better, Mahdi! Your family in blue is rooting for you.

This week, our NYPD officers joined thousands of officers from around the world in Washington DC for Police Week, honoring those who serve and those we lost in the line of duty.

Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the New York City Police Department Flag. The New York City Police Department flag represents a century of pride, valor, and sacrifice. The flag is modeled after the United States flag: the five white and green bars represent the boroughs of New York, while the 24 stars represent the cities, towns, and villages incorporated into the City of New York in 1898. The color green celebrates the history of New York law enforcement and can be traced back to 1658, when the New Amsterdam night watchmen—the city’s first paid police force—carried lanterns with green glass. Wherever and whenever it is displayed, we honor the rich history of our department with pride. Join us in celebrating.
