VEJA’s sustainable trainer story
We love inspiring companies that are doing their bit for the planet" at Selfridges, Bullring , Birmingham - 1850807567829619618

Not just for kicks: VEJA’s sustainable trainer story We love inspiring companies that are doing their bit for the planet (and making beautiful products while they’re at it). Enter VEJA (meaning ‘look’ in Portuguese), a brand – set up by Sébastien Kopp and his business partner François-Ghislain Morillion – that has reinvented the most everyday and functional item: the trainer. VEJA – Esplar leather trainers Why trainers? Sébastien Kopp: Because we love trainers – we’ve worn them since childhood and it’s with our generation that trainers went from the sports field to the street. It’s also the product that has the highest advertising costs. By cutting down advertising, we knew we could make a fairtrade and ecologically friendly trainer that would cost much more to produce but respect the environment and the people in its production chain.  What inspires your designs? SK: We like minimalism and practicality, trainers that we can wear every day and that become timeless. Was there one particular change in the world, or lack thereof, that inspired the building of a company that strives for transparency and action? SK: Yes, you could say that. We created the trainer we wanted to wear and that would slightly change capitalism. Something with more balance. At 24, we travelled around the world, and after a year of working on CSR (corporate social responsibility) for big companies, we discovered bad working conditions in a Chinese factory and saw that there were inconsistencies between the communications from these big firms and real action taken in the field. In 2005 – when we saw a wave of transparency hitting the planet with the internet, social media and a new speed of communication – we realised that the organisations of the future were to be transparent. And this is how we want you to be as a consumer: to know what you buy and to decide what kind of society you want to live in. Every day. “This is how we want you to be as a consumer: to know what you buy and to decide what kind of society you want to live in. Every day.” – Sébastien Kopp

Work in progress... While many designers design garments that can be created using flat pattern making techniques, other garments are created by working directly on a mannequin using techniques often referred to as “draping” or “moulage”. There are a couple of things to keep in mind when working in this way if you are using draping techniques to develop your own designs. If you are unfamiliar with how draping is different to pattern cutting there is a basic outline of the differences between flat pattern making and draping. This also covers a basic overview of how draping can be used as part of a process that will eventually arrive at a finished garment pattern. Note that draping can be carried out in calico or muslin, or you can drape directly with the final fabric. This will depend entirely on whether you are creating a one off creation, such as a custom or couture garment, or if you need to end up with a pattern so that the drape details can be duplicated for production.  There are an increasing number of images circulating online of designers and students who are using draping techniques, and this allows us to have an insight into different ways that garments are created.

"Like every French kid growing up in the nineties, I was obsessed with The Fifth Element. So, obviously, there’s no need to tell me that Milla Jovovich is an incredible actor and a stunningly beautiful woman. I’ve long admired her strength, style and talents and I’ve often dreamed of finding a way to work with Milla on a Balmain project. That’s why I was beyond excited when she agreed to sign on for our Fall-Winter campaign. I couldn’t wait to see the first images from the London shoot. I knew enough to expect great things—but, honestly, I wasn’t expecting to be so blown away, so quickly. From the moment I saw the raw footage, I knew that we had already captured exactly what we needed. As Leeloo says in The Fifth Element, “boooooooom ba da booom.” Done. We had it. No need for complicated edits or even a soundtrack. I knew, as soon as I saw it, that all we needed to do was keep it simple and retain the focus on what Milla was doing in that incredible space. The strong, minimal style may be new for Balmain, but it perfectly compliments next fall’s styles. - Olivier Rousteing
