Words by @taylorfreesolo // Do you remember the first time the realities of climate change hit you in the gut like a hurricane, unwavering in its path? Was it something you saw? In real life, or in the media projected through the glowing screen in your warm human hands? Was it a celebrity advocating her or his message that shifted your priorities? Was it science? Data? A Hollywood film? Your electricity bill? Food prices for things you hadn’t considered becoming ungrowable? Or do you live somewhere right now where you have felt the impenetrable heat for months on end, tore your finger nails through dry earth as you witnessed the death of loved ones, weathered an otherworldly storm surge. Have you suffered from an infectious disease? Yet? Climate change induced diseases are spreading rapidly and don’t see or yield to any kind of boarders. Genuinely, I’m curious and want to start a dialogue... Did you wait for the latest IPCC report (released this week) to wake up? Were you scared at one point (1999? 2005?), then relaxed, and now continue to feel paralyzed by fear? Are you already mobilizing in ways we all need to hear about? Are you creating paths for sustaining life? Or are you lucky enough right now not to directly feel the impacts? As Hulme mentions in the book “Why We Disagree About Climate Change”, instead of trying to solve climate change, "we need to see how we can use the idea of climate change – the matrix of ecological functions, power relationships, cultural discourses and material flows that climate change reveals – to rethink how we take forward our political, social, economic and personal projects over the decades to come.” Anyway. Maybe I’ll try poetry. This is awfully wordy. Love you humans. This photo was taken in Iceland where the braided rivers of water and earth trickled their veins and arrested my heart into yet another reminder... things will not remain as they are much longer. @sonyalpha @adorama

A proud tradition mixed with an uncertain future. This juxtaposition was painfully evident within every portrait of Domingo, a Chilean Gaucho of Patagonia. ~ Climbing on Cerro Colorado revealed not only incredible route potential but more insight into the complex Patagonia conservation story. To get to the cliff we enlisted the help of Domingo, a Gaucho whose family owns the surrounding land at the base. He grew up herding sheep here - “when I was 11 my father had me spend 3 months living up at the base of the rocks to tend the sheep living in the cave previously occupied by the Tehuelche Native tribes”. Laying on his sheep skin mat he looked incredulously at us, our drones and junk-show of climbing/camera gear. I don’t speak spanish, so I gathered a few tidbits of info from @andresbozzolo but overall I sensed the conflict going on inside of him. Due to the conservation work this place is on the verge of becoming a National Park and it became illegal to kill foxes and puma, and with those populations surging and killing the flock it became impossible to keep the family sheep tradition alive. ~ The future of this place is probably some kind of advanced sustainable eco-tourism (like @tompkins_conservation has done in Parque Patagonia), something Domingo can’t quite grasp yet. I’m sure in the moment he hoped it didn’t mean more gringos like me taking his photo. His culture even though it’s non-native and originated from the spanish in the 1600’s has evolved into something beautiful, something of its own. It’s a similar struggle all over the planet. How do we move forward and do the right thing for these wild places while educating and helping those who already have the deepest connection to the land? We didn’t see Domingo again since the horses went down the hill before we finished climbing. We hiked away as he lounged with his nephew on the soft grass by a natural spring. “I had a way of whistling to the dogs and could control the entire herd. My nephew never learned to whistle, he has a cell phone and other work...” ~ With @chrisburkard @jamesqmartin @_ryanhill_ @uavantage @zacharialorenz Eduardo @djiglobal

Congrats @ducttapethenbeer @cedarmesafriends @thenorthface @fitzcahall and friends !! ~ From @ducttapethenbeer - “The Bears Ears Education Center. Yes friends, it is a REAL THING now! Thanks to all of you. Thanks to your motivation, your actions, your voices, your creativity and love. Your desire to do something positive in the face of negativity. This past weekend, people gathered for a grand opening to celebrate positivity, care for a landscape and its interconnected communities. The Duct Tape Then Beer team was lucky enough to go and soak up some of the desert warmth. It was magic. So the center exists, true. It is beautiful. But there is ongoing work that needs to be done. Further cultural exhibits. An adjacent building that needs to be purchased for work space, storage and parking. Please consider giving what you can again to support @friendsofcedarmesa’s hard work. Thank you, friends.” ~ @protectbearsears @shotsfromabove @shotovercamera @sonyalpha @reddigitalcinema
