Look who I’m with! For the rest of her life she will be known as the first Muslim woman ever elected to Congress, but @rashidatlaib is a WORLD CLASS organizer, strategist, and leader. She is one of my peer heroes. Having her in Congress is a game changer. We are speaking together tonight for our friends of CAIR Los Angeles. Follow and support her work!
Hear me out for a second. I want to unpack something. OK? I posted this video from my homie @mossb back during early voting in Georgia. I lived in Atlanta for almost my entire adult life. And for the past few weeks I’ve been thinking about something that @mossb says toward the end of the video about “overly conscious muhfuckas” telling us not to vote. @mossb actually said something brilliant that I went out and looked at myself. He said he bet the guys talking that shit the loudest didn’t live in progressive Black cities where Black folk control everything from top to bottom. And you know what I did? I went and found out. I went and studied 10 dudes talking about how our votes don’t matter and won’t impact anything and without fail, all 10 of them live in cities and states controlled by white folk. See, when you live in Atlanta or DC or even Dallas or Houston this whole thing of “don’t vote because your vote doesn’t matter” sounds dumb to us. We’ve already seen what our votes can do. We run the whole city man. But here’s what ends up happening. These old cornball ass local dudes that have never seen the power of voting end up taking their small time local pessimism and posting it on social media to national audience. And it does damage. I’ll be frank. We have to start calling that shit out. Listen, be skeptical of politicians and parties. I am, but the notion that our votes don’t matter is foolish. Amendment 4 just passed in Florida. Badass women got elected to Congress and judgeships and leadership spots all over the place. That stuff takes votes. Some of y’all talking that “voting doesn’t work” stuff need to move and see life from a Black perspective for a change.
@AndrewGillum has just ended his race for Governor of Florida. It’s a heartbreaking loss, but brother we are so proud of you. You did this the right way. You maintained your dignity, your values, your integrity, and brought millions of voters to the polls -including hundreds of thousands of first time voters. You were the better candidate. Period. You consistently outclassed your opponent. This isn’t the end. It’s not even the middle. The best of your life is ahead of you. THANK YOU for stepping out there like this. The people are in your corner.
I love this woman. And I also love New York the day it snows. Every day after that is a mess.
What’s this man’s name? This at Smith’s grocery store in Las Vegas. South Highlands. A Latina woman and her mother were simply talking in the parking lot when he started berating them.
From @leemerrittesq: “Avontea and #JemelRoberson just learned that they were expecting a second child together 10 days ago. As Avontea tells it, Jamel came to her and said he was having stomach pains and was really sleepy all the time— sympathy symptoms. So he suggested she take a pregnancy test. When it came back positive they set a doctor’s appointment and discovered she was 2 1/2 months pregnant. Jemel loved being a father and was looking forward to his second child. He immediately started a new job working security at a local school, picked up some new gigs, and took on extra security rounds at the clubs. He also doubled down on his test prep for police exam he was scheduled to take in March. Jemel believed in being a provider and protector. He was a man’s man. The void left by his senseless murder is absolutely impossible to fill. I want you all to know what kind of man Mel was. What he did on Sunday was not a fluke. He saved possibly dozens of lives. He did so while even managing to preserve the life of the would be mass shooter. He wasn’t just a hero— he was superhero. He was the kind of peace officer our communities deserve. He represents what we demand law enforcement become. But for Avontea he was the father of her baby Tristan and the man who was actively showing her everything would be alright with the new child they were expecting. All of that security, comfort, assurance was stolen from her. It was stolen from all of us. #RememberJemel #NeverForget https://www.gofundme.com/tristan-amp-unborn-child-of-jemel-r”
Stacey Abrams just ended her bid to become Governor, but you’d be hard pressed to find a single fair political expert in the nation who thinks @StaceyAbrams would've lost in Georgia without years of voter purging and suppression stacked against her. She fought a inspirational, valiant race to the very end. But this loss was not fair. This is the new Jim Crow.
First off, it’s going to be great to have @ilhanmn in Congress. Secondly, and I should’ve seen this coming, since she is not only the first Muslim woman elected to Congress, but also a Somali immigrant, I should’ve known that she would be a target. She’s a woman. A Black woman. A Black immigrant woman. A Black immigrant Muslim woman....in power, during a time where all of those communities are under attack. But to see her attacked by “moderate” Jewish groups for supporting the human rights of Palestinians has been disappointing to say the least. I must say this again and again but standing up for the human rights and dignity of Palestinians does not make any of us anti-Semitic. I know Ilhan. She speaks out against anti-Semitism. We have to do better. I need the @adl_national to do better on this. Ilhan is an ally. #istandwithilhan
Listen people. We have to raise the bar on our activism. We can be nuanced. We can be sophisticated. We can loathe one form of bigotry and actively speak out against another. Let’s be consistent.
Look at how outrageously white and overwhelmingly male the new Republican congresspeople are, then slide over and look at how beautifully diverse the new Democrats are.
