I love this photo. I took it one morning on a golf course on Maui. Just fell in love with the energy and colors. I love looking at it regularly. To me it feels like the dawning of a brand new day (well actually it was) but more than that it reminds me that every day I get to start fresh and go after my goals, dreams and aspirations all anew. I get to say sorry and I get say let’s go after it. I get the opportunity to breath deep for another day. To kiss my wife (@michellebentley22) and love her more than I did the day before. I get to help a few more people reach after their dreams and goals even when they can’t see the road ahead. This scene, this creation from God, reminds me how beautiful life is and how much potential and opportunity there is for us to catch up and be the best version of ourselves we can be; for Him and for those that need us to be the best we can muster. I put a page together (www.isaketogenix.com) outlining how, especially for endurance athletes, people can get into a better fat burning mode to better fuel their body. I have to regularly remind myself “Don’t be the centre of your world”. I didn’t grow up having a relationship with Jesus. I’m still not ‘religious’ but I do have a relationship with Him. Living for God’s glory makes it much easier to live with the thought of being here for others rather than myself. Following God’s word reminds me to be humble, kind, helpful, encouraging and joyful. When I get away from that, for me, I find I lose focus on those characteristics. When I choose significance over success and helping others over myself then life is always so much richer. When I live for the glory of God it makes it simple to do that for others. I can easily port that out to living for other people and not myself. Life quickly becomes so much more meaningful. When I do that it’s easy to be happy when others succeed, when someone else gets the glory. Grace in life doesn’t just benefit the other person, it also rescues me from me. That makes it easier to do things for other people instead of myself as the centre of my world. Every time I do that my life grows richer and richer. That’s the only way to know true joy. Accumulating and accomplishing things for me never brings me joy. It might make me happy, but it doesn’t give me joy. Choose Joy over happiness. Happiness always follows Joy. It was a 110-115° on the Colorado River when @michellebentley22 and I came across this gorgeous waterfall. We were in the last couple of days of a week long whitewater rafting trip thru the length of the Grand Canyon when we came across this beautiful sight. The falls cut thru the canyon walls above it and the oasis above that were an amazingly refreshing and beautiful experience to absorb that day. It’s amazing the beauty you can come across when you least expect it. There’s so much beauty around us and so many wonderful places to explore. Do your best to experience as many of them as you can.
Grace - getting (and giving) what you don’t deserve. It’s such a critical quality to have if you want to have any meaningful relationship in your life. I learned quickly that I want and need to have grace in my life. I sure don’t want God (or anyone else) to give me what I deserve. I need to give that to others as well. Grace and mercy (not getting what you deserve) go hand in hand and they are so important to have and to give. We’re all broken people. None of us are perfect (although talking to some people you’d think they believe they are) and I couldn’t imagine being around anyone that thinks they are. The power of Grace in any relationship let’s the other person relax and feel safe around you. They know there’s no judgement, just unconditional love and understanding. Looking forward to getting back to Colorado and fly fishing again next summer. @michellebentley22 and I have places booked for a couple of weeks before Ironman Boulder next summer and plan on fly fishing, golfing, hiking and training before her race. 12 years ago when I joined this company I never would have been able to guess how great this experience would have become. Watch out for the drift. Ever been driving down the highway and you look up and see a car drive off the highway for no reason. Nothing around them. They just start to drift off to the side over the shoulder and then all of a sudden they’re in the ditch doing somersaults. Life is a lot like driving down the highway. You’re heading in the direction of your goals at the speed you want and you keep doing little course corrections to keep in your lane. Then we let some things go. None of our choices creates an immediate issue but they have us headed to that darn ditch if we aren’t careful. Next thing we know we’re in the ditch and everything’s a mess. This can happen in so many areas (health, wealth, spirituality, relationships etc). We do little things that don’t immediately ruin things but we’re ‘drifting’. A missed couple of workouts here, A series of not so healthy meals there, An argument with our partner that we don’t resolve before the end of that day, Thinking that we’re totally in control of our life when it’s Gods plan that is directing things. If you’re paying attention and focusing on it you’ll ‘see’ that you’re getting close to the edge of the road. Keep your head up. If your on a highway with those rumble strips or balls that your tires make a noise on then take those as little warning signs. Even if the radio is blaring and you can’t hear if you’re paying attention you’ll still certainly ‘feel’ that warning. Pay attention to the warning strips in your own life. Are you doing things that are contributing to your health or are you drifting off course. Are you securing your financial future or are you letting things go ‘hoping for the best’. Spiritually are you in alignment with what you believe and ‘know’ you should be doing. In your relationships are you actively doing things to humble yourself and promote a deeper closer connection with your partner. Watch out for the drift. Keep it between the lines my friends. Keep it between the lines.

Life is a lot like exploring. Michelle (@michellebentley22 ) took this picture while we were hiking down a trail out west somewhere. There were ups and downs in the trail, bugs were out, the bushes were thorny as all get out, but the scenery was beautiful and oh so memorable even there in the brambles. Right before we got to this area in the picture the trail closed down and almost seemed like it ended into the bushes and cliffs. We weren’t ready to turn around though so pushed thru in the direction we wanted to go. . The more we pushed thru the more the trail seemed to close in..... until all of a sudden it opened up and we had the most amazingly beautiful view. The valley opened up and this little river appeared and led us down this wonderful channel. Breathtaking!! . It’s so easy to give up when a bit of resistance pushes us back, but it’s just as easy really to keep moving forward. I’ve learned from athletics that all the juice in life, all the worthwhile efforts, come from getting thru the struggle and into the discomfort. Its where you find out what you’re really capable of and what you’re made of. You really do want to know the answer to that. When it’s easy the reward is usually not very memorable. The return we get from pushing past where most people bail and retreat though is almost always well worth the sacrifice, effort and intention for going after what you set out to achieve in the first place. . If you’re in a place now where things aren’t really where you want them to be just ask yourself “Am I (at least) heading in the direction I want to be, and am I learning from experiences that are tearing me down yet making me stronger and better?” If you are then keep going. There’s a beautiful plan for your life that’s there waiting for you. You just need to keep striving forward to go grab it. . It’s worth it. Trust me.
Sometimes when we get out on our own, away from the noise, it’s good to reflect on where we’ve been and where we’re headed. God certainly has a plan for us but it’s up to us to put ourselves in the game and dive into the situations that are going to allow us to grow into who we want to be. We’re of course already that person, but only thru realizing that gift by acting on our potential do we actually become that person. That doesn’t mean it’s easy, but it doesn’t mean that it’s hard either. It just is. Time is going to pass by anyway so you may as well take the actions to move towards what you want to do/become/experience. In the end it’s the thoughts of regret and of wasting time not doing those things for fear of avoiding the effort that really grind down on our souls. Open your heart to the possibility of who you already are and are so close to becoming. Move in that direction. The worst that’s going to happen is you learn and get one more step closer to what you’re meant to become. The best thing of course is that you actually become who you were meant to be. God’s just waiting for you to put in the effort to show that you really want it. So go do that.
For the longest time I believed that to get to where I wanted to be I needed to ‘develop’ myself’. That I needed to grow into my dreams by adding onto who I already was. That always made me feel like I wasn’t good enough to be who I wanted to be unless I was able to change. For sure we need to learn and listen to others who have been there ahead of us. But just ‘learning’ doesn’t change us into a better version of us. We are actually already everything we want to be. God has that plan already set in place. It’s not the adding onto who we are that’s going to accomplish who we want to be. Instead we need to tear down who we already are to ‘reveal’ our greatness. I’ve been a performance coach for a long time. I get people to their potential by giving them workouts that stress them to a point of creating adaptation. I tear them down and then they recover and get stronger/faster/better. It’s the stress that revealed that potential for improvement, not me giving them some magic thought or system. Yes we need to provide the right environment/nourishment/etc but it’s the stress that revealed that. So focus on just getting out there and giving yourself a shot at changing for the better by chipping away at who you already are, not trying to add to who you are to be someone else. What’s the goal in all this Change? Don’t be successful in life, be significant. You are already amazing in Gods eyes, all you have to do is reveal your glory. You won’t do that from creating ‘success’ but rather from going for significance. Don’t ask ‘who can I become by doing this or that’. But rather ask ‘who can I impact by doing certain things’. If you’re just Successful in life then after you’re gone people won’t remember you for long. If you’re Significant though, that will last an eternity for the people you impact.
