Photo by @TimLaman. Running camera traps in the rain forest of Borneo, you never know what you’re going to get. On this particular night, my subject was a Malayan Porcupine, one of the many fascinating mammals of Borneo’s lowland rain forest that you are unlikely to see even if you spend months there. The huge defensive spines of this animal are just highly modified hairs, and they look pretty effective to me. Part of my @NatGeo project to document the biodiversity of the incredibly rich lowland forests of , in West Kalimantan Province, . , , , .

Photo by @TimLaman. Aerial view of the spectacular Waigeo Island, with Kabui Bay in the foreground and Mayalibit Bay in the distance. This is one of the Raja Ampat Islands, home of the Red and Wilson’s Birds-of-Paradise, and part of the “Conservation Province” declared by the Province of West Papua, Indonesia. This province, along with its neighbor to the East, Papua Province, have made a major commitment to a green future on Oct 10 at a major international conference in Manokwari by committing to preserving 70% of their land as forest. This is hugely significant for our planet, and hats off to the bold leaders who have the courage to take this action. , , , , , , , @TimLaman. Photo by @TimLaman. Male Red Bird-of-Paradise high in the canopy of Waigeo Island, poses on his display perch with the islands and ocean in the background. Indonesia’s provinces of Papua and West Papua on island of New Guinea make up the Land of Papua or "Tanah Papua" in the Indonesian language. This region supports one of the only remaining large tropical forests in the world and is home to nearly half of Indonesia’s biodiversity. Over 600 species of birds are found in Papua, including 27 bird-of-paradise species, many of which live nowhere else on earth. At a major international Conference in Manokwari on Oct 10, the provinces made a major commitment to a green future. West Papua has declared itself a “Conservation Province” and both provinces have tremendous environmental leadership, and committed to preserving 70% of their land as forest. Amazing and it was very inspiring to be present here the passion of the governors to protect their lands. See our new video from the @BirdsofparadiseProject “Tanah Papua – A Paradise for Birds” at the link in my profile. I am excited to be at the International Conference on the Biodivsersity of Papua (ICBE 2018) in Manokwari this week with Ed Scholes representing the @BirdsofparadiseProject with like-minded people who are working to promote conservation in Papua and West Papua Provinces. Global interest in Papua’s birdlife is leading to increased opportunity for wildlife tourism and bringing newfound economic benefits to local communities. Sustainable development is not only important for the future of Papua’s forests and people, but also for the world. The Cornell Lab’s Birds-of-Paradise Project is working with the Governments of Papua and West Papua and other international partners to further science, engagement and conservation of the region’s biodiversity with a focus on the birds-of-paradise. , , , , , , , .

Photo by @TimLaman. Who is that peering in at the edge of my camera trap frame? That is an elusive Sunda Clouded Leopard in Borneo. I’ve just been up in Gunung Palung National Park in Borneo, checking on my ongoing @NatGeo camera trapping project, and this is one of the intriguing shots I found on my cameras. Instead of walking through the frame like I was planning, this Clouded Leopard just came in the edge, sat down, and took a rest. He triggered the camera multiple times, but he left again without fully entering the frame….. so goes camera trapping. Time to re-frame, re-set, and keep trying. But it is kind of cool anyway, and very exciting to get a glimpse of this spectacular animal, one of five cat species in this incredibly rich rain forest, one of the best remaining lowland forests in all of Borneo. , , , , , .

Photo by @TimLaman. A rain forest stream, Gunung Palung National Park. This park in the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan, is one of Indonesia’s treasures. With what some say is the best remaining example of true lowland rainforest in all of Borneo, its biodiversity is extraordinary. Along with my partners from BTNGP, @YayasangPalung @OneForest, and @saveGPorangutans, I’m working to document the biodiversity of this park that includes an extraordinary variety of forest types, from mangroves by the sea, through lowland dipterocarp forest like along this river, and up to the montane forest at the mountain summits. Stay tuned to @TimLaman.for a lot more from . , , , , ,

Photo by @TimLaman. A Leopard Cat, the smallest of Borneo’s five cat species, triggers my camera trap and takes a self portrait deep in the mountains of Gunung Palung National Park. My ongoing @NatGeo project is an attempt to document the lesser known and rarely seen nocturnal mammals of this park, one of the very best remaining examples of healthy lowland rainforest in Borneo. The images is in black & white because I made it with an infra-red sensitive camera and infra-red flashes (which are invisible to us and other mammals), so as to minimize disturbance to wildlife. , , , , , .

Photo by @TimLaman. A wild female orangutan in Borneo crosses a fallen tree making a natural bridge over a river. This is a new camera trap shot I just got on my recent visit to Gunung Palung National Park in Indonesian Borneo. I was there checking on my ongoing @NatGeo project to try to document the less well known nocturnal mammals. But in this case, I captured an orangutan female instead, actually carrying a baby on her belly (that is hard to see except its orange fur) who was being chased by bees and came down to the ground. If you look closely, you can see many bees around her. Orangutans like to raid bee hives and eat the honey, but when they get swarmed by the bees, they often drop to the ground to try to make an escape and this female just happened to cross this log over the river where my remote camera was set up. , @saveGPorangutans, @YayasanPalung, , , ,,

Photo by @TimLaman. Flowers drift down a river in Gunung Palung National Park, Indonesia. I just made a short visit to the forest at , and my timing was perfect to witness the synchronized flowering event in the forest canopy, the first stage of what’s known as “mast fruiting”. After pollination by small insects, the flowers fall en masse, creating this beautiful phenomenon that only happens for a couple days once every four or five years. These are flowers from the canopy giant Shorea johorensis. , , , , , , .
