A job well done! Virunga's sewing cooperative fulfilled a very large order of 14,000 bracelets in just under 10 days! The cooperative is part of the Park's work to support the families of fallen Rangers, helping widows to gain new skills and provide additional income for their families. Today is #WorldGorillaDay. Did you know gorillas are the largest primate on earth, and share 98% of their DNA with humans? Virunga is home to around a third of the world's population of critically endangered Mountain Gorillas, a sub-species of the eastern gorilla. You can read more about these amazing animals on our website. #mountaingorilla #gorillas #virunga #virunganationalpark #drc #congo #wildlifephotography
Virunga's Senkwekwe Centre is the only facility in the world that cares for orphaned mountain gorillas. The Gaboon viper (Bitis gabonica) is a fascinating resident of Virunga National Park. Recognizable by its large triangular head, heavy body and beautiful geometric patterns, this viper has the longest fangs, the highest venom yield and the fastest strike of any snake in the world—topping speeds of 300kph! Surprisingly, the Gaboon viper is considered a docile animal and human bites are rare. #virunga #virunganationalpark #snakes #gaboonviper #reptilesofinstagram
The Mutwanga II hydropower plant is entering the final phase of construction. Once operational, it will provide electricity to more than 40,000 users. Pictured here is the aqueduct which will channel water from the Rwenzori mountains down to the power station. The project is part of the Virunga Alliance, which you can learn more about by clicking the link in our bio. #virunga #virunganationalpark #drc #rdc #landscapephotography #greenenergy #sustainableliving #nationalparks

#FridayFact: Virunga is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including lions, which reside in the savannah plains of the Park's central sector. We caught a glimpse of one young lion cub, thanks to our "camera trap" at Lulimbi camp. #WorldLionDay #lions #wildlifephotography #wildlife #conservation #virunga #drc #babyanimals

We are so delighted to share the news that the mountain gorilla population has surpassed 1000! Incredible news for Virunga and incredible news for conservation. Following a period of such tragedy in the Park, these results are a tremendous comfort and sign of hope for the future of the Park #virunga #virunganationalpark #drc #gorillas #conservation
It is a difficult time for Virunga but we are incredibly greatful for the support and messages of condolences we have recieved in light of recent events. The Park is deep in mourning over the loss of Ranger Rachel Masika Baraka, and the next few months will be a significant challenge. If you would like to take action to support the Rangers and their families, during this time that it is sincerely needed more than ever, please do visit: virunga.org/donate #virunga #virunganationalpark #drc #parkranger
